340s motor

Post by MWB »

Ok, I have a 340s that I am working on restoring. The motor didn't have spark on one side but after replacing the CID box, got that fixed. Checked compression both are around 150lb. Cleaned the carbs put new gas lines on and it fired right up! Run good on the stand. So my question is, would you tear it down and go through it or would you run it?? Are parts easy to come by?

Thanks!

Pistons are nearly impossible to find. Since it runs and compression sounds like it is good I would still put in new crank seals. They tend to dry out and crack which leads to lean condition and burns the piston.

MWB,

I would run it. Along with the mentioned crank seals, I'd also replace the fan belt and the fan bearings. I'd also consider a rewound stator. Over time the insulation in the windings give up due to heat. Also inspect the the carb flanges. If they look dry rotted or cracked I'd replace them with genuine Mikuni flanges. In my experience 340/S parts are hard to find since it's a one year only sled with limited build numbers. IF you can find them they usually bring good money.

Don't take any chances with that motor.

Replacement parts are very limited and even more expensive.

Are the seals and other parts mentioned easily available?

seals and gaskets are the same or similar to gaskets of the consumer models and are readily available , new breed parts here on the sight would have them , pistons and hard parts are nearly impossible to find ,so be very caareful when wrenching on them , also make sure your carbs are clean etx so as to not burn it down , those parts become much tougher to find wade
