Hi Guys. Looking at the early Spit design, and I know Deere was way ahead of other sled builders of the time, that hood design just screams Yamaha Enticer as we knew them of the 80,s, kinda like the patent TSS design Deere had, and Yamaha came out with something so similar shortly after, you would swear both companies shared the same engineers...Rob.

Being a car fanatic and always have thought prototypes are so friggin cool. It is awesome when these 1-2 offs end up surviving and are around still today. Like the
69 Grand Prix steam powered car that Pontiac built and Leno has today.

Did this sled survive?

Or did any of those IFS Sportfires make it ?

The only IFS prototype anyone can confirm still exists is the one Polaris had at Waconia. A photo from the back lot at Polaris shows two IFS Deeres sitting side by side with an unidentified sled under a cover and the other appears to be the one from Waconia. The Waconia machine had a Sportfire chassis with what appeared to be a Liquifire engine.
It had been parked outside for an unknown length of tme. I believe the thread about this machine is still on the site, pictures included.

That strap holding the fuel tank down looks like the same type of strap used on old number 54 to hold the seat down.

Deere built all these prototypes with hydraulic brakes, including one as tiny as this example, and all the race sleds with at least an optional hydraulic setup. It's nearly incredible they never even offered it as optional equipment on at least the performance machines where it would be somewhat critical. One could buy all manner of options on farm equipment and Deere went to great lengths to exploit that in marketing programs.

Looks like a regular JDX/00 seat to me? It's got a 295 Kohler w/ a Walbro, maybe they wanted to test the DD before they had a free-air engine to put in it.
