76 440 Liquidfire

Post by beechjetdude »

I am restoring a 1976 440 liquidfire. The machine will crank up on the 2nd try, which I think is awesome. I checked the compression on the cylinders, the waterpump side is 111,and the pto side is 142. The service manual says 120 to 130. I will be tearing down the engine to check things out, but need some insite on why the one cylinder is so high in compression. The other one might be rings, or seals I presume. The motor runs great ( havent had a chance on the snow yet) in the garage. And does anyone know where I can get a cable for the temp gauge?

The compression loss may be due to a leaking head gasket or worn rings. Leaking crank seals will not effect the compression. Once the cable breaks on the temperture gauge, the whole gauge must be replaced.

Hey Thanks Harley,
I appreciate your wisdom. Its too bad that you have to replace the whole gauge.
