Invader Dual Pipe Question

Post by Liquifried »

I just bought my first non JD sled yesterday for $250.00 It is a 1979 Invader, but the interesting thing is that is has dual exhaust pipes. I searched online for a long time and could not find this anywhere in the 1979 literature. I went on Kawitrax and asked around. I was not sure if they made an LTD version early in the production or if someone had dropped in a newer motor at some point.

The sled has 1700 miles, all original and in VGC overall. The guys on Kawitrax said that the pipes are rare Kawasaki factory kits. Does anyone here know more about these? I am thinking about swapping this motor and pipes with one my Liquifires if they will fit. I was told that the kit inlcuded the motor having to be ported and jetted by Kawai.

Wonder if anyone here has tried to put the Kawai pipes in a Liquifire before. Let me know!

Hello Liquifried,

I am not an Invader expert, but I can tell you the 1980 Invader "LTD 4/6" came factory with dual pipes, as did the 81-82 LTD powered by the new 8-port, square block, mono-head 440.

The 80 LTD 4/6 was basically a standard T-7 with 2 more booster ports added, making the 4 transfer ports transition to 6 intake ports in the jug wall. Plus they had 2 plug heads. I am not sure if the exhaust port was changed from the T-7 to the square block without looking at a few of the motors I have on the shelf.

I can't verify that Kawi did or did not offer an update kit, but I am pretty sure the 79 Invaders all had a single pipe stock.

I hope this helps,

That sled is probably worth something if left original. If it is rare, it would be a shame to cannibalize it, even for a Deere! Sell it for a tighty profit then buy yourself a set of AAEN pipes.
Just my opinion.

they are probably just a set 4/6 pipes bolted on the standard invader. I have a set of these pipes i have been trying to sell for years. They are very heavy, I think i paid 50 bucks for them. I have a friend of mine that is a kawi guy and there was a one year build i think invader or 4/6 with a quad plug invader motor/ liquifire that has 2 sets of coils on it with the twin pipes but dont quote me. good luck

Thanks! I think I am going to keep it and ride it. The sled is in real good shape and my buddy who is a Kawai guy was impressed with the sled. Time to do the carbs, seals and gaskets. I just ordered a real nice seat cover for it. :beers;

Unless it is a rare factory kit all regular Invaders had a single pipe. Only the 4/6 and Interceptors had twin pipes standard. My 1980 440 Invader has a single pipe. I have a pair of 4/6 pipes with worn flanges that I would sell cheap. They are also missing the flanges that go on the motor. I have heard they will fit a Liquifire but you will have to cut different holes in the bellypan. If they are a factory option I would keep them right on that Invader. Has the bellypan been modified?

The belly pan on this sled has not been modified. The pipes have nice boots that mount in the belly pan for the exhaust to exit the bottom of the belly pan. The heads on the sled are normal / round like the Liquifire and there is only 1 spark plug per head. From what I have found out, this was a 1 year factory option / kit offered in 1979.

Looks like someone simply put the LTD pipes on the Invader. Does not look like the 4/6 motor.

LTD 4/6 pipes would have a ball socket connection at the manifold. As was pointed out on the kawasakitrax site, this is a rare high performance pipe kit and a nice find.

there was a kit offerd by kawasaki for the invader called a "power up" kit came with a new set of cyl's , dual pipes (pipes slightly different than 4/6 pipes)jets and instructions to remove the spacers between carb boots and engine.this was a rare kit not alot sold. if you are a full member on kawitrax you have access to factory parts manuals it shows the kit and instructions .you can probably see if the part numbers on cyl's match to hope this helps-chris
