I bought a starter for my 83 LX, started bolting it up, bob at image provided me with 2 shims and 1 came with the unit. How do I determine if I need them or not?
thanks

TF - how to shim starter properly?
RSplash40,
I would start by installing 1 shim and tighten the nuts for mounting the starter. Take the recoil off and look inside at the nose cone of the starter to see if the drive gear is hitting the flywheel, then try turning over the engine by hand. The engine should turn over freely. If the starter is hitting the flywheel, add the second shim. I have heard of others never needing the shims, but 1 shim will never hurt if not needed and installed.
After the starter checks out, wire it up and turn the key and release to make sure the starter drive retracts back into the starter.
