Merc Snowmobiles

Post by 427cobra »

Hey Guys,

While going on a walk the other weekend around the new neighborhood I had my eyes peeled for sleds....

Well I spotted a 80LF and a Merc snowmobile....

I like the looks for those Merc sleds. This one was sitting on a trailer back in the weeds. Had the white hood/blue decals. My question is...

Are these good sleds to restore or get running..?? I was thinking of trying a differnt project this summer.

Seeing I dont know much about these I wouldnt know what to offer they guy for it. I was thinking of going to see if he was interested in selling.
What would be some things to look for on these sleds??

What about locating parts..etc??

Thanks!

Eric

The third generatiom Merc's are the most sought after models, the fastest and the best enginnered. They all have the white hoods.
The LC and FA models are the best bet but even a Fanner is a nice find.
Parts are out there and some reproduction pieces as well.
Go for it!!

Trail Twisters are the normal models, Sno-Twisters are the "hot" models. Both are very light. It seems like about 5-10 years ago Sno-twisters where THE popular sled to restore by collectors, before all the sno-pro sleds were being shown.

Offer them $50 as a start.

This is the best time of year to find sled deals.
I was working in the yard yesterday and a guy drove by and gave me a 76 Scorpion whip.

Free sleds are the best!

Eric does the sled have dual headlites?? if so that would be a 74 or 75 merc S/R it should be a 340 kohler fan.. I bought 1 here back in the fall of 09 for 80 bucks brought it home squirted some gas in the carb and it fired up first pull. Note had not been run in 8 years.. it ran great the problem with those sleds are the seats go bad around the tail light and gas tank.. as far as i know there is no one reproducing them as of now !! I did clean the sled up and traded to a buddy of mine who collects mercs. If you need parts let me know and i will get you his number and email..

thanks Rob if it is a trail twister snag it !!! oh the s/r sleds had the vents down the middle and dual headlights and the twisters had single and the steering arm was underneath the belly pan
