493 Hirth motor

Post by Cabindweller »

Anyone know off the top of your head where the coils are hideing on a 493 Hirth motor. I drug home a 69 Moto-Ski MS-18 last weekend. Not in bad shape. Motor is free and has good compression, no spark. I filed the points. I will be going deeper into the motor soon but for the life of me I can't figure out were the coils are. The plug wires go ito the crank case between the jugs.

Oh yea, I would like to find a maual for this motor

Thanks

Jerry

Tip the engine upside down/bottom side up.. they mount them between the lower crankcase half & the engine mount.
Jerry unless there is a broken wire from the points plate or a broken ground wire, or the plug wires are pulled out of the coils ( they can be replaced as Bosch coils have the plug wires so they screw in & out ) after cking all this MY BET would be on dirty points ( hold open & flush with starting fluid ) or possibly bad condensers ( IF Possible look at the back of the condensers, IF there convex there usually bad..

Hey Kenny Thanks a million. I know I would have discovered where they where hid, at some point. I already filed the points and sprayed them with Starting fluid and blew them out with air. I bet there is a issue some where else. Mice have had some fun in there.

Mice & wiring don't mix, I'm sure you'll have your work cut out for you on this engine..

Kenny, I got lucky. I pulled the motor and removed the bottom plate everthing looks like new. I went back to the points and gave them a better file job and started to see signs of life. Found out the plugs were not helping matters. After I cleaned the plugs a couple of times, I had good blue spark on both sides and it now will run on spray. I Just wanted to hear it fire. Things will have to wait with this project as my 295/S will be going back together over the course of the next few months.
