340/s vs 340/5 motors
340/s vs 340/5 motors
so we know that a 340/5 cranks will fit in a 340/s but will the complete rotating assembly and jugs work on a 340/s crankcase ? i know the gaskets have different part numbers . just wandering if anyone has tried any of these combos .ive got an extra 340/s crankcase just wandering if i can use a 340/5 doner motor to complete it ?? thanks wade

Re: 340/s vs 340/5 motors
I don't know about your exact situation, but I have used a 440/5 to fix my 295/s.
I have had a 295/s crank next to a 440/5 and they are nearly identical. Both cranks have the same numbers stamped in them too. supposedly the 295/s cranks have tighter tolerances, from my manufacturing experience, I can bet at most they just picked the better ones off the line for the 295.
Cylinder wise, the port timing will be different. Side by side, the 440/5 ports looked similar to the 295/s. I never mapped them out to accurately compare them, but I'd bet they have less time-area for the lower rpm use of that motor. Download a copy of the two stroke tuners hand book http://edj.net/2stroke/jennings/2stroke ... ndbook.pdf and you can read about the effects of port timing and how to mod your ports to run with the 340/s pipe.
I'm personally working on a hot-rod 440/5 motor for a Long travel deere sled.

Re: 340/s vs 340/5 motors
I am new to this and have what will sound like a dumb question but what is the 440/5 motor that you refer to?

Re: 340/s vs 340/5 motors
the 440/5 motor is a piston port motor used on the 1974 500 600 and maybe a few others .the 340/5 is the motor that was in the jdx4 specials the 75 400s and more wade

Re: 340/s vs 340/5 motors
The 340 RS engine uses thicker/beefier rods, but as far as I know & can figure out that is the only difference...
