wanted '78 coil cover

Post by 400brian »

Looking at the photos of Don's restored engine, I realized that I am missing the cover that goes over the coils.

Anyone have one they can part with?

I believe the 76-78 are all the same?

Linder,

The coil covers on the 76-78 LF's all interchange. But here is the bad news: I do not think they should not be used. By blocking airflow around the coils, the cover only works to shorten their life. If you do use one, machine vents in the top and bottom to let air move through them.

Actually Raindeere, Kenny and I were just talking about maybe it would be best not to have the cover on it, for just that reason.

So there, we're way a head of ya.

But Don's just looks so nice...... :beers; Interestingly, JDParts.com only lists the coil cover up to serial 80,000.
Which I believe leaves out the '78s. So I'm wondering if the '78 LF originally had it?

I have 4 original 1978 440 Liquifires, coil covers on all of them. Have owned them since early 80's, haven't changed a coil on any of them yet, and they are still used every other day.

My 78 has a cover. I still have my cover on the 76 with original coils. Is the thought of removing it just someones idea or was there a bulletin?

Hi Guys,

There is no bulletin or official guidance from Deere on the coil covers that I have ever seen.

This recomendation comes from experiance (melting coils) and good practices. I actually melted the body's of two new coils back in the 80's when I slightly overheated my 76 Liquifire. So I do not run the cover at all. Bolting them to a motor that runs 160 to 180 deg F and then covering them does not seem like a good recipie for long life, but many have survived just fine in under those conditions.

And if you look at some modern sleds, like my Sno Pro Cats, the coil is mounted on chassis, away from the engine vibration and heat.

Feel free to use or discard this suggestion as you see fit.

Thanks,

Joe does make a good point.
Many manufactors have moved the coil mounting point away from the engine.
And the CDI box for that mater.

His point makes since to me.
