Ignition Coils

Does Anyone here know roughly the average lifespan of an external ignition coil such as those found on the JD Spitfire, and Kawasaki Drifter? I have both of these sleds, and both need new coils.

Ignition Coils

I'v Never had a CDI go bad yet, but I had to replace a coil on my 340 Whip a couple years ago. On the JD I always foul plugs out on the PTO side and it wont run past idle. A friend told me to test the coil by slowly pulling the caps away from the plugs and seeing if the engine picks up. I tryed it, and it worked!
My Kawi on the other had Is very fussy. I tryed the same test on that engin, and as soon as the spark leaves one cylinder the whol engin dies. This sled is also fouling plugs on the PTO side, and the plug on the fan side is running abnormally hot. Far hotter than it sould be. I took the sled for a 5 min ride, and couldn't even touch the plug with my bare hands. the other one could be handled just fine.
It also cuts out at high RPMs. I dont have a tach, so I have to guess it stars to act up at about 3500-4000. I cant get past there. The sled will run fine up until this point, and then its like I have a passenger thats playing with my kill switch. It dies then runs, dies then runs. Afterwards, the fuel lines are full of gas, but the primer lines are completely dry. Normally they are full from priming it. To start the sled after its episodes, I have to leave it sit for about 2 min and then pull it over w/out priming or choking the sled. It will then usiually start on the 4th or 5th pull. The Kawi's coil was the best explination I could come up with. Anyone have any other ideas?
