Need your help Dator boys

Post by 80spitfire »

Well guys, I started my Dator restoration today and I seem to have already ran into a speed bump  I pulled out my Dator-lite suspension and I now have no doubt that it was for sure raced lol When I bought the sled I couldn't quite understand why the front of the track sat up so much higher than the back. I was hoping that it was just a seized suspension shaft but unfortunately I was wrong. The oictures that I put up show how it was mounted to the tunnel. Now keep in mind that this is a Cyclone replacement tunnel that was put on after the sled was crashed so I'm not sure if this suspension ever even worked on this sled the way it sits. Basically what I'm wondering is did the front shaft sit a quite a bit higher than the back one on the Dator-Lite? Or is mine messed up? The front hinge is pretty jacked up too. It looks like it's been hobgobbled togethor multiple times. I'll probably just have to make a new one of those. So if anybody has a Dator with a lite suspension please post a picture of how it's mounted. I also remember someone on here said they had one sitting on a shelf if you could take a picture that would sweet too.ImageImageImageImage

The front hole is normally higher up in the tunnel. on a 76 or 77 tunnel the hole is like 2 1/4" ahead and up like 1 1/4" I have an email you should see pm your address. the holes have to be drilled to fit the lite susp in the tunnel. not sure this one was done correctly. sorry no pics off my dator no lite susps....

That's good to hear that maybe the reason why mine din't sit right was cuz it wasn't done right in the first place. I like that idea better than a screwed up suspension. I pmed my email btw.

The Dator-Lite rear suspension was thought to be the proto-type to the 1978 Cyclone / Liquifire rear suspension. I believe the front holes should be higher.

Hmm very interesting. Thanks for posting. I always knew that it was the prototype, but I've never actualy seen a picture of a CC suspension. Is their anyway you could measure to see how much higher up the front arm sits than the back?

Thanks,
Brian

That's not rust. It's patina.
Adds charector and value to the item.

Yeah he I talked to him about them and I ended up just taking mine to a local welder to have a new one made. Thanks for the info though.
Oh, I almost forgot to tell you, the needle bearings from Wiseco didn't fit so I'm probably gonna have to find the repop ones for the new pistons

Can't the pistons be opened up enough to accept the ones they shipped you?
Also Wiseco furnished the bearings With there pistons for the Dators?? can't they be ordered from them? the whole Idea of them repopping the pistons was so availability wouldn't be a problem this time..

Well, the problem is that I ordered those bearings they used in that Yamaha that you mentioned and they don't fit in the connecting rod. I'll have to look into those ones that they used for the repops and see if they'll exchange them for me.
