Looking for a tach

Hey everybody,
I know it's a long shot, but I'm looking for a NOS or very very nice 10,000 RPM tach for the prestolite ignitions. I just bought a NOS 100 MPH speedo this weekend at St. Germain and I'm looking to match it up with a NOS tach. I know that this topic has been covered before, but I'm not totally positive if my tach should have a deer on it or not. All the 76s I've seen in person haven't had a deer on them and mine doesn't so I think I'll try to find one that doesn't. Who knows maybe it was a running change in 76 or something. I would consider buying one with a deer on it though if it was nice enough. Here's a few pictures of the one from my Dator without the deer and the one from my 77 LF with the deer.

As gauges were optional it is not uncommon to find original gauges on sleds that do not match the model year.

Case in point would be the fact that a dealer maybe ordered 100 gauges and sold 100 sleds but only 80 customers wanted two pay the extra $24.95 for the gauge.
Next model year the dealer ordered 100 sleds again and only 75 gauges. So then he sold old style gauges in new model sleds.

This was cronic with Cats as they changed gauge faces/colors just about every year in the early to mid 70's.
In fact in 1972 Cat offered 5 different speedos!!!!

I have seen 72 guages on 73 Deere's. While it was not as offered in the brouchure it may have been what the dealer had in the display case and that is what got installed.
What you don't want to do is go backwards on gauges. Example a 72 Restored 500 with 73 guages. That would be a no no.

You may even find aftermarket guages that were installed when the sled was sold new.
If the customer wanted gauges and the delaer was not able to get the correct ones there was always the aftermarket models by SW and Westfield ect.

To make a long story short( I know, too late) either gauge face is fine in my book.

Yeah it's amazing how often you find random nonoriginal gauges on sleds. The way you explained it was spot on too. I'm proud to say though that my 72 sports an original chrome ringed speedo and an NOS chrome ringed tach. As far as I'm concerned I'll throw either gauge on it aslong as it's in good shape. Besides, what judge will ever be able to prove that I put the wrong one on anyways? Even we don't know lol

Well, it's in the kind of shape you'd expect for a 78. Not trying to be funny but if it were perfect I would have used in in my CC restoration. 0-10 without the leaping deere emblem. $10.00 plus shipping.
