Winter Project for Summer

Post by JDXspec »

Ok so I Haven't been working on sleds much lately. Since theres no snow (anymore anyway) I have been working on my Farmall Super M for tractor pulling next summer. Finally seeing some progess on it. 6 cylinder cummins with a turbo ought to make it sing. Hoping to crank it up soon.....

Dustin,

You have been telling me about this project for a while now, and i must say, that thing looks sweet! It really fit together better than i expected. Keep up the good work, and keep the pics "Cummin" :lol22: A vid of this thing running would be pretty cool....

Are those 806 frame rails?

Dustin
Those are 06 or 56 series frames from a gas engine tractor. The diesel rails would have a notch cut out so the fuel pump accessory drive would fit.

Just some tidbits from my useless knowledge file.

You are correct. I forgot that the timing cover was so much larger on the diesel tractors. Good eye Pat.

Here's another one.....

The C - 301 gas engine in the 806 and 856 gas tractors had a taller valve cover installed so the engine didn't look too small for the space it occupied under the hood. I could never figure why the 856 gas was ever built given the large number of 806 gas models that were traded back in for diesel versions when farmers got tired of the fuel consumption and heat issues. Collector's item, I guess. I've only ever seen one 856 gas in the flesh.

A farmer who owned a 4320 Deere and an 806 diesel told me the 806 would do everything his 4320 did and use less fuel in the process.

I kind of find that hard to believe since there is about a 20 horsepower differnce between the two. The 4320's were hard on fuel though. Its tough to make an efficent setup with a blower and a Roosamaster....

I owned a 4010 and a 4020 both gas when i was in high school.... They didn't stay around long because they were so thirsty. I sold them for more than i paid for them and walked away happy. They were an awesome running pair though.

Dustin,

How far are you going to have to stretch that hood? The M hood looks like its a mile and a half long when you are sitting in the seat, but i think its still going to be too short for this project.

DE correction a 560 hood is a mile and 1/2 long. The hood will need about 6" stretch, not too bad. another picture- it may not seem like alot of progress but its coming got guages, intake, wiring, steering all done. Found and M&W gear reduction starter for it so it should crank the cummins

I questioned the story myself, but this guy has no reason to fabricate it. He no longer owns either of those tractors and the info originates from the days when he pulled identical
moldboard plows with them. Both tractors were bone stock, BTW.
