Bagged two 72 500's Today

Post by 69camaro »

I bagged two pretty nice 72 500's today locally. The nicer of the two needs one of Tasky's backrests and needs the seat to be redone but otherwise is really nice. The guy I bought it from claims it has weak spark on one side but it has some pretty stinky gas. I'm guessing it needs a good fuel system cleaning more than anything. The second one is also pretty nice too but needs wood and cover for the seat. It's also missing the cowling inspection cover over the carb. This one however has electric start and a new battery. The guy I bought them from gave up when the second one wouldn't start even with a new battery. I'm sure stinky gas and bad fuel lines have a lot to do with it. They both have not been ran in about 5 years. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with either since I have so many sleds. :lol22: Of coarse the wife asks why I bought either. I just thought it was a pretty neat find. I love finding them close to home. I'm kind of leaning towards keeping the cleaner one and putting the e-start from the other one on it and selling the second but I don't know at this time. I just think those 72's are so cool being so different even though I havn't been a mid-mount person. Does anyone have or know where I can get rebuild kits for the carbs? And if the one does indeed have weak spark on one side I'm guessing these have separate coils and same as above, Availability? I would have to guess the crank seals are shot or at least should be replaced. :letitsnow:

Great to hear you saved some 72' 500s! I have a restored on and they're so much fun. Like you said, they're really cool since they're so different then the other years.

The Winderosa fuel pump kits are still available, but the Winderosa and Walbro complete kit supply is drying up. There are some misc. ignition parts still available, but NOS is best. The quality of the aftermarket ignition stuff is lacking.

Thanks Brian. I'll try to take that in a good way!!!!! I can't believe how much different a 72 is vs a 73. Another thing is that being a 72 the value should be quite a bit higher since they have so many parts that aren't the same.
