295s Dog

Post by jdsledsrgr8 »

Nut and bolt restored my 295s 3 years ago. Since that time about every 3 months I hook up a gas tank to the carbs directly and run it on the stand. Runs fine on the stand with RPM up to 55-60 and as fast as I will dare run it on a stand upwards of 50mph. Finally the novelty of a trailer queen wore off and I decided to ride her this year. Got it all filled up and hopped on for a quick ride to test it before Waconia. It just dogged, I could only get up to maybe 15 MPH.

Not really clear what could be the problem under load. Clutching or running too fat. I will be at Waconia with it, obviously not running the vintage ride so any thoughts or insights would be welcome.

Classic case you never really know how your resto came out until you take it for a spin.

I would suggest you talk to Troy ( hoosierdeereman ) Grumpy assisted him get his jetting figured out a couple of years ago. You also could have an ignition issue. If the clutching is stock, it ought to work.

I have a similar problem with my 295/S. Worked great on the first ride, which was at Waconia, but half way around the lake something clicked and it would barely run after that. Now it runs, but idles only on choke and top speed is 30 mph. I thought maybe a CDI or stator, but all checks out. Maybe popped an oil seal, I'll check that next but haven't had time to dig into it anymore. I'd like to see yours at Waconia. Call me at 701-866-0679.

Thanks Howard. I believe 2 years ago your 295s and my 295s were side by side at Waconia when JD was the main focus of the show. Yours won the show I believe.

Ignition I hope not and I doubt. I had the stator rewound by an outfit in Canada (expensive), new hewtec cdi, new flywheel and new trigger.

I bet the jetting. I bought these carbs from Durand who now has moved to I believe Michigan. He set them up for the 295s but I decided to get fancy and sent them to be elctro shocked cleaned (or something along those lines). I bet that process messed up the jetting because it was spitting some fuel.

Anyone going to be at Waconia that could take a look at my carbs and see if that is the problem?? Happy to pay for the service versus me having to take it to a mechanic once I get home. Or at least let me buy them lunch and a couple beers.

Here's a post I saved from a couple years ago about carb jets and settings for the 295/s. May be helpful.

Here's another post on clutch weights, springs, secondary that may also be helpful.

I have saved these to be able to use for future reference. Hope they help you out.
Hopefully we can get together tomorrow and discuss this some more!

Howard it was great meeting and visting today.

As we talked today I sort have figured it out. Without the airbox it runs pretty much top notch. I can pretty much lift the aluminum skis off the ground, if I punch it. I still think it is a little rich and blowing too much fuel out the carbs. So I got some tweeking. Another thought is my choke might be sticking a bit.

I was great to meet and visit with several members this weekend.
