One of my happiest days was the day I watched my 317 leaving. In my opinion that was the lawn tractor version of the 340/S. Bad Series I motors and no power steering (especially bad when blowing snow). 318, now there was a lawn tractor.

just my .02....

Paul,

Those series of Deere mowers/lawn tractors were some of the best built ever! As DA mentioned the 317's did have some engine woes. Tough frames and transmissions though. There are still lots of these around. You drive though any mower dealer or John Deere lot and there will be one sitting in the used area. I have a 83 420 with the 60 inch deck. It will start it's 29th season around here this year. It's a very tough machine but the years have taken its toll. The original 20hp Onan was replaced at around 1100 hours. I bought a Linimar (subcontrated by Onan to build their engines) 20hp replacement. It's pushing close to 800 hours on this engine. The tractor is still in very decent shape for its age but the deck is getting very thin in places and has been repaired a few times. I love mowing with it and as bad as I hate to I'm thinking about upgrading to a newer Deere zero turn.

HMMMMMMM interesting post. I have never had a 317 though. True they are tough, but that hole I saw in the side of that Kohler motor wasn't very appealing. I've had a few 318,332, and 332 diesels. Great lawn tractors. Your paint job is very nice. You going to shelve it as a collector or use it?

I love mine, but it's nice to have a spare engine laying around.. It's a flat-lander tractor not good on side hills ( engine oiling problems ) unless you can fit a combine side hill kit on it? You also need to keep the engine very clean of debre like mowing clippings..
I retired mine as a mower & only use it for snow plowing or pushing dirt, yeah power steering would be nice but it exercises the arms, LOL never take the plow or chains off any more and only change the oil every couple of years now..

My 317 made its way to Holmen, Wisconsin, my father has it up on his ranch now. This machine had the series 2 kohler in it, meaning it had the good engine and side hill mowing would not affect the oiling. I upgraded to an X465 with a 54 inch deck !
