Help with 340s
Help with 340s
I'm working on a 340s and need some help. 1st, are all the black pieces painted blitz black? Whats the trick for changing the bearings in the idler wheels? Where will I find new hifax? I need at least 1 new ski. One of mine is bent. I'm having trouble getting the rear suppension apart. Been hitting it with alot of wd40 and have some of it apart. any help would be apprecited!
Thanks!

I'll try to answer as you asked the questions:MWB wrote:I'm working on a 340s and need some help. 1st, are all the black pieces painted blitz black? Black pieces: I usually paint with a "Satin Black" because you can buy it at any hardware, NAPA, etc but yes I suppose it originally would have been "blitz black"
Idler bearings? Never changed them, hopefully Lindner will come along and tell you. He's the idler wheel expert here.
Hifax: New Breed Parts right here on this site. JD used same hifax but most likely you'll have to cut about 4" or so off.
Ski: New ski, not going to happen most likely. 340/S skis are unique if you are a purest, if not maybe go composite.
Rear Suspension: Lot's has been written here about overhauling suspensions. Any advice as to removing shafts etc will pertain to your 340/S as well. Search "suspensions" or "shafts" or something along that line. Trust me we've all been through this before.
Hope this helps.

Re: Help with 340s
I looked at new breed parts, didn't find hyfax. (did find some other parts though) Went to Dennis Kirk found some black ones. The ones on my sled are white. Wonder what color they are supposed to be?? I would like to put it togeather as correct as possible.

Re: Help with 340s
Here is the story on hyfax: New Breed doesn't have any because the Sno-stuff ones (white) have not been available in over a year. They have not been officially discontinued, but they aren't available. The black ones DK has are probably the Garland Mfg. version. I've been trying to order these, but my supplier hasn't been cooperating.
Make sure you check out the other 340/S specialty parts - engine mount plate, coil mount bracket, hood alignment brackets, snow flap.....

Here's the FAQ regarding idler wheel rebuilding: http://www.jdsleds.com/community/viewto ... f=4&t=6587
We had been getting the white hyfax from Manufacturers Supply, don't know if they still have any, they were indeed SnoStuff.
You may have to use heat to disassemble the suspension shafts, use care to avoid damage.
The '75 skis seem to be very hard to find, let alone NOS ones.

Food for thought....
Use a macthing pair of aftermarket skis or skis from a different year Deere and resell the rare one of a kind OEM ski you have.

Re: Help with 340s
If $$ aren't a big concern, a new set of plastic skis is the hot setup!
And really, money should be no object when you're working on a Deere race sled. Just don't share that with my wife.

Re: Help with 340s
alright, 400brian that link helped alot. Thank you! Couldn't open the pictures though??? That would help alot too to see exactly what you were talking about. On the skis, the one is only slightly bent so sounds like I need to try and straighten that one. Still soaking the skid shafts with wd40 trying to lossen them. Thought about heat, just didn't want to hurt anything...

Re: Help with 340s
I've already spoke with Matt about the photo issue. It seems the site provider is the culprit.
I do still have the photos, so I'll see if we can get them back up.
