Need some ideas? Maybe I'm just nuts!!

Post by monte44 »

For the last two years I've been kicking around the idea of restoring a "old school" yamaha vmax. When I was young my dad bought a 85 vmax new and I just remember how bad A#% it was! Man that sled ripped! I found a super straight 85 with a toasted engine for next to nothing but, I have a feeling it will end up being a sled that is "not bad but just needs everything"! The people I have talked to about them always say "stay away from those vmax's". Are they basket cases? Am I nuts for wanting to restore one? Any ideas would be great. Thanks. :beers;

They are a great machine if treated well. I allways wondered why my Dad bought a Phazer instead of a V-max. Fuel economy was the answer. I found an 83. It has been in my collection for at least 10 years. It is the fastest sled I own. Still love it. Lots of information at vintagevmax.com TASKY

I remember my dad having an 81 srx first and thing was even faster than his 85 vmax! I also remember that 81 srx being in the shop non-stop with recalls. He traded it off on the never released 82 vmax and ended up with a sorry under powered 82 srv. He jokes around about how he's still waiting for his 82 srx to arrive at the local yamaha dealer! ha ha!
