Ride with the Champs 2013

Post by 400brian »

As we are now into December, it would seem the time to start seriously thinking about the upcoming riding season.

The big event on my calendar is of course the "Ride with the Champs"up in St. Germain on Feb. 16th. It will be the seventh time for a few of us, and the fifth "Vintage Challenge". The trip to St. Germain has become an annual tradition, looked forward to eagerly, and reminisced and re-hashed endlessly.

One night last July, I was watching a outdoor show called "Northland Adventures". The host is Dave Carlson, and he does the show out of Eau Claire, WI. It is more than just a hunting and fishing show ( though there is a lot of that ), Dave covers other outdoor issues as well, and seems to do it without offering his opinions on the subjects.

Northland Adventures is carried on around 20 stations across the northern US. http://www.wqow.com/category/183733/whe ... adventures

It occurred to me that Dave really needed to do a snowmobiling segment, so I shot him an email, inviting him to come up and cover the "Vintage Challenge". Dave replied with some interest, so I called Jamie at the HOF, and had her send Dave a DVD of last years ride. It was July, so I laid low until this week, when I re-connected with Dave, asking if he was interested in coming up to ride with us.

I haven't said anything about this until now, because I just didn't know if it would happen or not.
I talked with Dave on Dec 7th, and he told me that the date is on his calendar, and he is looking forward to covering the event.

After some discussion of what we do and when we do it, it seems pretty settled at this point, that Dave and his cameraman will drive up on Friday the 15th, and take part in the poker run. He may need a couple of late model sleds to film from. Preferably one a touring sled that the cameraman can ride two up on, so that he can concentrate on filming. Dave has a lighter camera, and will film as well. I offered to put him on a vintage ride, but he says he would prefer to concentrate on filming us.

Dave took a moment to emphasize, that the story he wants to tell is about us...a bunch of guys riding around the northwoods on 30 and 40 year old sleds. I took that to mean he does not want to do a promotional piece for the HOF, and I understand that. We'll get some plugs in for the HOF, but the story will be the men and the machines.

So...I'd like to see a good turnout of JD sleds on Friday. We need some ideas for scenic backgrounds to film at. My first thought was of us running across Big Saint, and the trail north of there towards Sayner. If you have an idea, lets hear it!

Good work Lindner. This should be pretty cool, but make sure we talk to Jeff Zeller, the organizer of the Poker Run, to keep him in the loop. Should generate some good publicity for that event and the RWC.

And I can say I knew you before you became a famous WI TV personality, LOL!

It has been a while. It would be great to see everyone. I remember we had to stay on a icy lake but it still was one of my highlights. It was a great time no doubt. It's evolved so much since then.

Excellent work, Brian! I would encourage you guys who are on the fence to go ahead and go! Our group is bringing two newbies this year and i guaranteed both of them that they would not regret it!!!We have never come home from that weekend disappointed.
