My Summer Project...

Post by 427cobra »

I finally picked up my Grandpa's old Johnson Seahorse...

I remember family vacations to the lake....and he would always bring this motor with. Lots of good memories out on the lake fishing!

He bought it used back in 1960 or so. So its been in family for awhile.

Ive never worked on boat motors before...so this should be fun! I did get the original owners manual with it. Which should help...

So any tips or tricks with these old engines would be great! Probably wont do much with it until spring. Hoping to have it ready for the family vacation in July!

I have a version of that sitting in my shop from when I had a 12' fishing boat. I think it was a '54? Maybe it was '64. The top cover wasn't quite as styled as yours though. I was doing some engine work on it but never got it quite right, it would not get up to full RPM.

Eric,
A couple tips for you on those old girls:

1 - Unless the ignition coils have been replaced recently with new ones, GUARANTEED the coating will be cracked causing secondary high volatge to leak out. They are both located under the flywheel. Relace them as well as points and condensors (.020" gap) and you will be good to go in the ignition department.
2- As with ALL outboard motors, replace the water pump impeller and all parts associated with it. Pay attention to gear case oil - if there is water in it, re seal gear case.

Any other questions while you are working on it, shoot me a PM, will be glad to help you out.

Thanks Greg! I'll let you know if I run into any road-blocks.

I found the tech manual online AND it appears NAPA carries parts for these.

Planning on building a motor stand tonight so I can find a spot in the garage for it.

Eric,
I think you should build one of these to put that Johnson on.

Now that's a good idea. Pretty neat boats. Might need to invest in some wood clamps!
