Parting a sled out

Post by 427cobra »

I had no idea that parting out a sled took so long. My buddy and I started on a 80 LF last weekend....thinking it would be a hour job. Three hours later and some grinding and cutting....it was done.

We had the worst time seperating the tunnel from the front section. There sure are a lot of rivots.

We did however get 13.00 for the Aluminum!! So thats almost enough for a case of cold beverages.

Don't worry guys this sled was shot with no hope of any restoration.

Just thought I would share my Labor Day weekend story.

Well lets see.

- both ski assemblies (one ski is kinda bent)
- steering linkages
- motor (doesn't turn over)
- decent hood (only one crack in it)
- rear grab bar
- suspension (some bogie wheels are shot)
- secondary and primary clutches (both would need to be cleaned up)
- some wiring
- brakes
- chain and gears
- coil
- tach

Thats about it.... maybe some other small stuff I can't remember

And that's exactly why it's called "Labor Day".

I did the same thing last year with a 79 Ski Doo Everest. Told my wife it would take about a couple hours to tear it all down. Two days later, and some Oxy-Acetylene, I finally had the track off from the rusted monster. Nothing ever goes as planned, now a days, I just double my time estimate and add 32 min.

Even then, I'd rather spend a weekend working on a basket case sled than sittin in front of the boob tube. I learn a lot more about vintage iron than I do about watchin info-mercials on how to pump iron and wasting good money doing it.

I have parted about a dozen sleds in the last year, and even two of the same model can take quite a bit of a difference in time.

I can also offer a little advice..... Air impact, air ratchets, air cut off, air hammer, torches, and a really big hammer make it go faster.
