1982 Trailfire Special (Canadian Special)
1982 Trailfire Special (Canadian Special)
I had one of the board members ask me to share a scan of the 1 page literature i have for the 1982 Trailfire Special. I finally made time to do it so i thought i would share it here on the board for anyone interested.
I also was lucky today in the fact I found and brought home a 1982 Trailfire Special which has the correct VIN (as found in the parts manual - J34SL.......) and has the features listed on the literature still intact. If any board members are interested, please let me know via this thread and i will be happy to take pictures of the features unique to this model of Trailfire and post them on this thread.
What is really cool is the sled has the original selling dealer sticker on it who is a friend of mine that used to be a CP dealer not far from where i bought the sled.

A picture of the sled i brought home today from the ad i found it in. If you look carefully, you can see the marginal snow wheels in the skid frame as well as the handlebar clamp mounted push-pull primer which is listed in the literature as one of the features of the Trailfire Special. Over the course of it's life, somone replaced the hood and windshield with one for a 1979 440 Trailfire but, no big deal, just happy to find a sled that i have never set eyes on let alone would have!:

Headlight switch? Is that on the dash?

Todd - Believe it or not, yes it has a headlamp switch on the flat or horizontal surface of the dash in front of the tachometer or where the tachometer is located. If you look REALLY closely at the literature picture, you can just make out the lever of the switch. It is a simple, single throw toggle switch with a boot over it. In the parts listings, it identifies a switch, small wiring harness, nut and boot for the headlight switch option. I will take some pictures of mine when i get an oppourtunity and post so all can see. I would be curious as to why the machine would be equipped with that option. Maybe, perhaps, something to do with using it for hunting in the Arctic so the headlamp could be shut off so as not to alert wildlife..? I thought of that reason since one John Deere employee i talked to mentioned that a lot of these sleds were sent up for the Inuit to use...just my 2 cents...

Hey Greg,
Another great find buddy! Please post more pic's. I would like to request pic's of the skid since that was the only 'Fire series Deere built with a wheel kit and cleated track.
Congrats on bringing her home,
-Joe

Some pictures of the chain case guard (same type of chaincase as on the Liquifire with adjustable roller) and fuel shutoff. An image from the parts listing showing a better or clearer image of what the chain case guard looks like:

Re: 1982 Trailfire Special (Canadian Special)
Hey Joe, Thanks! It's not like i NEEDED another sled, but this one needed to be saved - as you can likely agree!
Don, Thanks! I agree, it's a piece of history in more ways than one. First, i have never seen one "in the flesh" until i found this one. Secondly, My friends were the original selling dealer! In fact, i called them today to ask them about the Trailfire Special - He did remember them and (in his words) described it as a "souped-up" version of the regular Trailfire. He claimed he had never sold one until i told him that this one had one of his dealer stickers on it - on the seat right above the tail light.... "Oh, i guess i DID sell one of those then!"....... Needless to say, he wants to see it and he just MIGHT still have the dealer portion of the original bill of sale still in his files......
