????'s about 74 JDX4 Special

Post by JD340S »

Just recently picked one of these up & have a couple ??/'s. In the 74 brochure they show the sled with the small JDX windsheild & the ribbed vacuum formed seat with the hump on the back. Mine has the sewn seat cover that is flat & standard 100series winshield. There aren't any holes drilled for the "L" brackets for the small windshield or rubber well nuts in the gage pod for the small windshield either. Pics on the site of this one year wonder show it the way mine is. Also any thoughts on the Bendix carb?. AWZ

The photos in the brochures are either '73s or pre-production sleds.
'74 Xs are normally seen with the full windshield. However, the one used might be a bit shorter than the 00s. If you look it up in JDPARTS.com, I think they list a different windshield number. I bought one from DK last winter, and it is very simular to the full WS, just a bit shorter.

I have a '73 with the brackets and holes you are talking about. '74 Xs I have do not have them.

I also believe my x4 special should have the "full windshield" as it don't have the holes, but I believe I have the vaccum formed seat on mine, but rough... (I haven't looked at it lately, it's in "parts machine storage").... and I wil try to remember to check what carburetor is on it..... I THINK I also have a bendix, but not positive.

Yes, the '74 X4s used the Bendix carb, as did several of the later 00 series models.

We've discussed the seat situation before, nobody is sure if one seat or the other was used exclusively on these models.

I have owned two X4 specials that have had the sewn seat on them.
