Console Model Plates

Post by Matt »

I've been trying to come up with an application chart for the clear plastic model ID plates that are on the top engine cover or right below it. Ddub is working on reproductions.

Ddub has this photo from his '73 600 that he thinks is original, but I don't think I've ever seen them stacked like this. Is anyone else's sled like this? My thought was that someone added the 600 plate, but my question then becomes, what year did the 600 plate come from?

The JDparts listings for all these plates does not make sense. It shows only a universal P/N for both '73 and '74, but I'm pretty sure '74s all had the model on them. My '73 400 only has the John Deere 5 times one.

Also, there seem to be differences in these plates year-to-year as to what the CC number is. For example. 436cc vs 440cc. Please post your year/model what what yours says.

Matt,

I am pretty sure all the 73 vapor lock update kits included a new vented top motor cover that had the 5 lines of "John Deere" printed on them. I don't think they were used on the 74 machines, but I am not 100% on that.

Yes, Joe is correct about the update kit parts.

The picture of Ddub's cover is a replacement emblem. Never seen one like that before.

436-438-440... Whatever.

I have seen 300 and 295 and 290.

Take your pic.

Oh yeah there was also the long thin emblems with the CC in the middle and sometimes on the end.

Maybe the suppiler just changed tham and it was no big deal. Or none noticed?

Oh! Didn't think about the update kit. The long 600 plate that's shown above, could that have been on the original top cover and they transferred it?

I didn't touch anything on my 800, and this is how that looks. Seems that it is different from year to year.

My '74 X4 Special read "339 Cubic Centimeters" below the JDX4 logo on the badge. My neighbor had a '73 and it had a different badge. Can't recall exactly, but seems like "292 CC" was part of it in addition to:
John Deere
John Deere
John Deere ..... as I recall. Memory is not entirely clear, but it was definitely different. I was faster with the 340 slide machine. That I remember!

The JDX4 in 73 had a Kohler 292.
The JDX4 in 74 had a CCW 340.

The tags changed every year as far as I know.

Plus if you lost the cover while trailering the machine and you want to JD to get a replacement, it may have been the current model year and the badging may have been different.

Matt,
Thanks for the help on figuring this out.

My head is spinning........

Does 72 have a plate, and if so does anyone have a picture of it?

It is very confusing.

I have seen the 3000 Kohler engine listed as 292, 295 and 297.

Take you pic.

I wamt a JD 600 tag that says 600cc.
