how much chain lube dose a 76 cyclone take

Post by crazzygunner »

I just got done replacing drive cogs and bearings and replacing broken speedo key and adding a chain tentioner.
I am wondering how much oil I am supposed to put in I looked through my snowmobile repair book and don't see it in the JD section so I looked through FAQ and I did see something interesting 50 weight is recomended not 90 that's good to know because I was going to use the thickest gear oil I could find being its leaking I put in new cork gasket so it must be coming from the cover seal or the bottom plug. So I plan on takeing it apart and making sure the seal is sealed and then putting in the recommended oil .also on a side note my headlight was acting up it wasnt working last season I fou a loose wire and got the hi beam working then this season I started it to to try to get the low working so I played with the toggle switch and then the hi blew so new bulb then nothing played with the switch and it started working like supposed to should I replace my voltage reg sorry for making this so long just a few things I am finalizeing thanks

Evan

Thanks that's what I thought I figured the top plug was for oil level worst case filler to the top but its got me think in mabey you are supposed to remove booth plugs then add from the top plug till it comes out the bottom one ten plug the bottom then the top that's how you get the perfect level similar to a boat motor just an idea thanks for your quick reply that way should do the job before I did the work I left it the way it was when I got it the chain ten toner broke and gasket where ? So previous owner loaded it with grease and ran her for years I did too chain sloppy never hurt any thing but now was the time to make it right added a stud and tentoner so chain is snug also if you don't mind what have you used for chain case oil mabey it would be in my best interest to use the good stuff I put in my cat.

I found it no luck on the PDF must be on my old hard drive I did find an owners manual and my hunch was right put sled on level ground pull bottom plug if oil comes out its good and to add remove plugs and add till it comes out the bottom plug for correct level I knew there was something about the plug being higher then the bottom of the cover.

When you replaced the driveshaft bearings, did you install the large O ring around the outer edge of the chaincase side bearing, between the flangettes?

I have never seen an oring since I owned it and I this is the second time I had it apart since 2010. I put in new cork gaskets one on the back of the chain case and the other in the tunnel. I am trying to imagine where an oring should go. Also we where debating how it all went back together we came up with chain case /gasket /tunnel /Bering holder/Bering/the other holder /cogs Bering retainer/Bering /inside retainer/ tunnel/speedo / sound correct. It was hard to figure out because so many people monkeyed with it over the years and my book doesent have any good pictures. At one time I think there was a Bering retainer on bolt sides of the tunnel one in the inside and the outside but we figured this time the Bering and retainer belonged on the inside. Other wise the Bering would slop around.
