Driveshaft Bearings
The John Deere bearing listed in the parts catalog for an 80-84 Fire Series chaincase side driveshaft bearing is M69015. I think the number was replaced by JD8665. Can anyone confirm that?
Secondly, the bearing for the speedometer side of the driveshaft is listed as JD9335 for all models from 190,000 up. There is no bearing listed for serial numbers below 190,000. Anyone know why that is? I will tell you that the JD9335 works just fine on an 80 LF driveshaft.
We'll discuss jackshaft bearings in another post.
I know a lot of you use aftermarket bearings and I don't begrudge for that but I prefer using John Deere bearings and they are no more expensive.

Re: Driveshaft Bearings
I just put four bearings from Matt on the 82 Sporty 3- 1" and 1-7/8" and I got the better ones, and they seem to fit correctly and should work just fine, but of course the real test is on snow.

Re: Driveshaft Bearings
Breaking News....
Mother Deere does not manufacture bearings.
They do sell quality bearings made by Fanfir, NSK, Dodge and others.
And I am sure none are Made in China that come with a JD part number on the box or bag.
A radius 1" locking collar bearing insert for 205 pillow blocks is extreamly common.
Probably just as common as 6205's.
You can go on ebay and by USA made 6205 bearings in lots of 10 for about half of what they get at the local bearing shop.
But be sure to check country of origin as there are junk bearings for sale also.
They are packaged in a tube so individual packaged bearings cost more.

Re: Driveshaft Bearings
Isn't the JD9335 is the bearing that has the hole in the outer race to allow it to be greased. The 80-81s didn't have a grease-able bearing on the speedo drive side. I always wondered if they just missed revising the parts list because the flange part numbers don't reflect that change also.
After seeing this three times on three different sleds I only use bearings from a known manufacturer (typically SKF) for jackshafts and drive shafts, but as you mentioned everyone has their own opinion about bearings.

Re: Driveshaft Bearings
I have a local bearing distributor here in Princeton, Illinois.
Called BDI or Bearing Distribution Inc.
I have taken every bearing on every sled to them and had the exact same thing sold back to me (meaning style) made by NACHI, costly but I have had no problems.
They even asked for the application and said some of the bearings used by JD back in the day were not rated for the speed as they should have been. Could have been a sales ploy, but that didn't matter.

And when I sold cars when asked "Is this car any good?" my answer was "sure it is".Danzig wrote:

Re: Driveshaft Bearings
Paul, you seem confused. Stuff made in Japan is good stuff, It's the stuff coming out of Taiwan that is inferior.

In my book Taiwan is not bad. It is the China stuff that is junk.

Re: Driveshaft Bearings
My opinion (for what it's worth) There are good and not so good bearings made everywhere. In the Walmart age where things are manufactured to a price point. It seems that there is a lot more lesser quality parts.

JDT is right. John Deere doesn't manufacture bearings. They just repackage.
Everyone's mileage seems to vary with all the bearing options out there...
