82 spitfire issues!

Post by Bubsy »

I got a spitfire last sat, it ran but not great so I brain gas cleaned carb, she fired up ran good just didn't won't to idle when warmed up so I put new line from tank to pump and new filter, fired it up it idled for a few minutes I went to take out for a rip and it just bogged down then eventual quit it would idle but bog when trying to move, now it will fire with gas in the cylinders then it quits, plugs are wet. I'm going to pull carb again and have a look. The pump seems to be working, it's like the float is stuck not letting fuel through or too much ??? I wish I had left it alone lol. Any thoughts would be app.

How old is the gas in the tank?

Maybe should drain the tank from old gas and fill up with new gas, clean the carb and fuel pump and make a new test...
And new spark plugs could also be good.

Would a plugged exhaust cause this?

If it runs on gas directly in cylinders, but can't draw in gas from carb you either got a stop in fuel delivery before intake or a air leak in the crank house.

So if the fuel pump pumps gas to the carb and you are 100% sure that everyting is working in the carb, you have to check intake leaks, crank seals or cylinder base gaskets.

It could be like Bubsy said, a plugged exhaust  If you take the exhaust off and try to start the sled you will found out, loud and clear

I tryed everything I knew, so I thought the only thing I changed was the fuel filter so I took it out give it a pull and it fired right up, I did notice lots of air in the fuel line to carb with the filter on so I guess it must be a faulty filter?? Wierd but she is running now still not idling when warmed up but it is running. The idle mixture screw is pretty badly worn so wondering if that's the issue, I can screw it right in and it doesn't seem to do much? It idles perfect when cold but soon as it warms up it won't.

If you are unsure of the history of the sled, the best insurance is to change the crank seals.
