Happy New Year!
I currently have my 82 Trailfire LX apart waiting for a set of rings to arrive. While it was apart I figured I may as well go through everything and clean it. I pulled my intake manifold out of the parts bath today and blew the oil injection valves out. One felt like it was almost plugged solid while I was able to get some airflow through. I took a can of compressed air that you would clean you keyboard with, hooked it up to a new 1/8 line and gradually pulled the trigger. Now, the valve with some airflow is easy to get air through, the valve that was plugged, you can get good air through it but they are noticeably different in terms of pressure it takes before air starts flowing. I'm worried when I start it up when it's cold outside that the oil will be too thick to pump through that one valve.
My question is, if you put your lips to it, should it be easy to blow air through or not? Are they an actual valve or are they more of a free flow fitting?
Thanks in advance!!
Mark

Re: Trailfire Oil Injection Valve Question
Mark,
They should flow quite easily, but they are a check valve. I would guess that there is some built up residue keeping one from opening properly. Clean it out good with choke and carb cleaner and you should be in good shape. While you are at it, check the condition of the drive key for the pump. They are a pressed wire key that can break over time, causing catastrophic results. I usually don't run the oil injection on the fan cooled sleds, but it is your choice.

Re: Trailfire Oil Injection Valve Question
I noticed the same thing when I cleaned my oil injection system on my Sprintfire.
And as I am used to Yamaha motors who has a open brass tube for the oil injection in the intake, I drilled out the nozzles.
After that I found a forum thread about it and as said, it's a check valve that need som pressure from the oil pump to open.
But I will run with open tubes and meter the oil and gas %
Of course I run premix when testing.

Re: Trailfire Oil Injection Valve Question
I believe the drive key is similar if not the same unit as the speedo drive key used on many sleds including Deeres. They are reliable to a point but if the speedo key breaks, you recognize that issue immediately. Not so for the oil pump, which is why many systems on fanner Deeres get disconnected in favor of mixed fuel.

Re: Trailfire Oil Injection Valve Question
I've got them both sitting in Carb cleaner overnight and will blow some through tomorrow and see how they' are! Thanks again!!
