TF tach and odd noise?

Post by 427cobra »

The light on the tach does not work. Its a NOS tach so the bulb sould be new. The sled did not come with a tach so I was just wondering if the wiring may not be correct causing the tach not to light up?? The tach does work.

Anyone else had this problem??

Also this is an odd question. There seems to be a rattle/buzz (metal to metal) sound coming from the exhaust side of the sled when I was riding it. (at least thats what it sounded like) Then when I would turn right it would go away. Or when I got up to cruising speed it would go away.

Everything looks to be tight.

Not sure if you can help me on the last question. Just tought I would throw it out there.

Thanks for any help.

The first thing that comes to me on the noise, is the possibility of a bearing going out on the drive shaft. Particularly because it changes when turning.

TF tach and odd noise?

If not the jack shaft bearing, maybe something in the chaincase or brake area grinding. As for the tach light, is it grounded? Did you try the light bulb in the speedo socket to rule out the bulb. Does the speedo light work?

yellow wire should have power with a test light if it does tach light will work .

the rattling could be from a looses exhaust, recoil , or worn out bushing for spindle due to lack of grease.

lift cled off ground so skis are free and do some checking, it coould be a shot bearing or it could be something else.

Eric-

make sure the tach has a ground wire off of the mounting bolt. They usually ground to the speedo mounting bolt and then a seperate wire goes from the speedo to a chassis ground.

Cyclone crazy hit it on the head. I installed a tach on my trailfire and the light wouldn't work. The fix was a little jumper wire from the speedo mounting bracket to the tach mounting bracket. The plastic dash does not ground the instrument.

Finally got around to taking a look at the TF yesterday. Ran the jumper wire...which worked!! After I read the responses I knew that was the problem...plastic is not a good ground...duh!!

Also looked for any loose parts and saw that the exhaust bolt had rattled loose. So I hope that was my problem.

When I woke up this morning to my surprise there was snow on the ground!!! So I might go for a short ride today!!
