JDX6 stator help

Post by mjhorning »

Hello,
I recently acquired a JDX6 with a 440/22 RV engine and I have no spark. I was told it was “put away running” but that was several years ago.

I have pulled the stator out and am working on replacing the breaker points and the condensers. I have noticed that the cylinder 1 and 2 leads are wired differently. Is that how they are supposed to be? I can go into further detail if an explanation is needed. Maybe they are supposed to be different and that’s ok. I wanted to make sure before I went through the hassle of de-soldering and re-soldering.

The bolt holes on the breaker points are slotted, how do those need to be set? Do I set them when they are mounted in the engine?

And yes I have replaced the ignition coils and spark plugs already.

Other than one side being wired red and the other white, I would say they are wired the same. They have to be assembled correctly for the arm to be insulated from ground.

The points are set with a feeler gage with the flywheel installed, as the cam is inside it.

Timing is set with a dial indicator and test light after points are set.

Procedure is in the service manual. Go here: http://www.vintagesnow.com/John_Deere.html

Thanks Brian,
How are the supposed to be wired?
Here how they are wired
Cylinder 1- leaves the generating coil and is connected to the top of the condenser. From the top of condenser there are 2 wires leaving 1 goes to the insulated arm and the other leaves the stator and goes to the wiring plug.
Cylinder 2- leaves the generating coil and is also connected to the top of the condenser. From the top of the condenser it leaves with 1 wire wired to the insulated arm. Also wired into the insulated arm is the wire that leaves to the wiring plug.

What I am assuming is that cylinder 2 is correct.

Ok, referring to Service Manual SM 2100. Your JDX6 should have a Denso ignition system. If you look at the wiring diagram, it doesn't show this clearly. But, on page 10-18 in section 40 it shows on the Denso system 2 wires going to each condenser. One of those wires is coming from the ignition generating coil, the other is going to the breaker point. You then have two wires on a common connector attaching to the breaker point. One is the wire coming from the condenser, the other goes into the harness leading out from under the flywheel. Those would be the red and white wires that go to the external coils.

So, my guess is that what you are describing would work either way. In the Kokusan system they joined 3 wires at the condenser and ran just one to the breaker point. I have no idea how you ended up with what you are seeing. I can only assume someone has visited this before and did it "their way".

As far as the no spark issue. Try it with the white plug below the coils unplugged. This takes the ign and kill switch out of the loop. Generally cleaning the points will resolve the problem. 400 grit folded in half worked between the contacts, blowing out any residue with compressed air. I have even had to clean new points to get a good signal to the test light for timing.
