Just got myself into a project 1980 sportfire, picked up the sled for $100, in fairly good condition besides the fact that someone has swapped in a 1974 ski doo elan 250t motor.
Being the ski doo guy i am i saw an oppurtunity for a fun summer project. I also picked up a pretty well trashed 2001 ski doo mxz 500f, basically everything is worthless other than the motor, clutches, controls, and rear suspension, which is exactly what i was looking for.
The plan is to swap in the 500f motor and clutches, 2.52 drivers and rear suspension/track. And with some research it looks like i can probably press some doo drivers onto the JD drive shaft.
One reason i wanted the '01 500f was that the sled has electronic reverse. I havent even pulled off the JD secondary so one part of the project i have not looked into at all is how to get the ski doo secondary to work while hopefully keeping the JD chaincase.
The end goal is a fun reliable rider for vintage rides. Should be a fun summer project that wont pry my wallet open too far. Want to keep the look as original as possible other than the skid obviously. Not trying to do full resto or anything the sled will be ridden a lot hopefully.
If anybody has any helpful information or tips please feel free to share. Ill throw some pictures of the project as it progressed
