400 is running...couple of questions

Post by hvyhorsepwr »

Thanks for the input on getting the 400 running. I wound up running new fuel lines and priming the pump with a gravity fed fuel supply. Seems to run pretty good other than I dont know what it should run like. When I got it running I found it to smoke eccessively... when I ran the rpms up. I used amsoil 2 cycle mix with 93 octane gas. Don't know if this was the best oil to use? Also the engine did not idle down quickly. Is this a trait of a 2 cycle?

I am also in need of a drive belt and would also like to put a tach and speedometer on it if they may be available. Also the lift handles/grab bars are broken off the sled and would like to replace them if available. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS. Sure glad I found this site....you all are very helpfull especiallly to a newbie!!

There have been speedos for sale on ebay quite often as of late. Mike Hudsizak may be able to help you as well. Look under members of the list. I've got his name spelled wrong.
Tachs show up less often.

As for the smoke, it is not uncommon for the CCWs to smoke quite a bit until you get them warmed up. Oil is a personal choice, I prefer to run mineral oil, Pennzoil 2 stroke.
Others swear by the synthetics. We have an oil FAQ.

For other parts, watch ebay, or put an ad here on the list.

The smoke and idle-down sounds like it just wasn't up to temperature yet.

Eric

Look up ebay item no. 4588962066
I believe this is the correct speedo for your sled. You can check at JDPARTS if you want.
I have dealt with that seller before with good results.

For drive belts, go to Central Snowmobile, Dennis Kirk, or most any other supplier.
If you have a local sled dealer, they can probably get you stuff like this thru Parts Unlimited. ( wholesaler )

400 is running...couple of questions

Post by hvyhorsepwr »

Thanks for the information. As far as the speedo... seems that the part which doesn't show up is the drive from the "drive spool" which the cable attaches to. I looked at a 600 with a speedo and saw this drive attachment, which would be under the battery box and I wonder if it is the same part that will work on my 400?

Do the kits come with this part? Can't tell from the ebay listings but have sent an email to them regarding what is included. If not, any ideas on where to go for that?

Finding out the John Deere dealers dont carry any parts for these sleds anymore.

Thanks again for the help.

Give me a few days to look around but I should be able to hook you up with the speedo parts not sure if I have a speedo itself but the spool and cable shouldnt be a problem. I have the rear bars 1 set with so so chrome and 1 set with the chrome sandblasted off that could be painted etc. They are not shoe peices but functional for a rider sled.
