SLED IDEAS

Post by Mr. Deere »

Im looking for a sled that i can easily mod for racing jets and pipes and suspension and th like. For now im think somewhere in the 440 or 500 as a base line starting Hp. I dont know what would be faster but the fan would be easier to fix. I dont know what to get be it a skidoo or an artic cat. Maybe a F5 Or A Skidoo 500. I dont know what to get so im asking you guys. I also want something that like the deers are low to the ground none of the hight tippy sleds. Although i may get stuck with one if im looking to do maybe jumps. small ones for now. Thanks for all the help and Price does not matter Im getting one at Auction so its gonna be cheep. BOB

i wanted to do the same thing. i know i wanted something that was all aluminum, so the search began. i came across the ski doo blizzzrd 6500, the RV style. it has an all aluminum chassis, fiber glass belly pan and a 340 liquid cooled engine. it got totally stripped and a 440cc (about 85hp) liquid took the place of the 340 (maby 60hp). this sled has a unique chain case set up (no jackshaft) and thare is no way it will hold up to the extra engine hp. this weak link got pitched and i installed a complete chain case/jackshaft set up from the 9500 series blizzard, (ugly sled). the heavy 16.5" track gave way for the lighter 15 incher. the 340 engine, with the original chain case set up, sits the engine dead center in the chassis so with the jackshaft set up the engine sits off to the left of center, a complete new style engine mount needed to be fabricated. so far i have about $300 into this sled and around 50 hours labor.

Bob,

If you are looking for a very fast and light 500cc sled, it's hard to beat a Cat F5. 104 hp with the same bottom end as the 440 cc SnoCrosser. I think it weights in around 450 lbs or so. Long and skinny (128 X 13.5) track hooks up in a straight line. Good Jumper with the "Sno Pro" suspension package, and less wieght with the FOX air shocks up front.

The 03 versions should be 'relatively' affordable to a young guy like yourself.

Thanks for all the help guys. Ya i like the build up KEC340RS24LC sorry im not looking for vintage though. Ill probably go with the Fire Cat. I Have only heard one bad thing about a recall on the gas tank other then that they are nice and look reall good. I am getting one at auction so dont really have much of a selection. I wonder Joe can i jump with the stock suspension you think. Also what do the years mateer is it still the same engine and such if I cant find an 03. Thanks BOB
