Ski doo Safaris

Post by sledchad »

Me and my fiance are planning on for next season for getting a couple sleds but she isnt into the vintage sleds AT ALL. She wants something a little newer than 25 yrs. I came across a skidoo safari thats a 91 model with a 462 LC with reverse, electric start, 2 up with hand and thumb warmers so i thought this would be a great sled for her i thought. They cant cost an arm and a leg like 500-1000?? Anyone know more about these sleds? I was trying to find some articles on line and couldnt find anything.

Just a trail riding sled for her. She isnt gonna go fast. I have heard some of these are pretty heavy but they look like a good riding sled.

Yes that Safari may be a little heavier than an '80s fan cooled, leaf sprung one but you have an independent front suspension and a proven oil injected, liquid cooled Rotax engine used in mid-late '80s Formula MXs and early 90's Formula models , '84s SS25(one year only anniversary model), Safari Grand 'Luxes and Everests to name those I know of. All in all it would be a good inexpensive trail sled and Safaris' seem to have retained value despite being a mom and pop trail sled, I attribute it to its simplicity and reliabilty, IE preseason an '87-'88 fan cooled elect. start model in nice shape sold for about $700 on eBay far more than most in era SkiDoos were fetching at that time. I am undertaking upgrades to 2 different leaf sprung Safaris one will get a Blizzard MX 503 fan upgrade and the other willl either get a 462 L/C upgrade or a 537 L/C from the Formulas for some screaming fast Safaris' and possibly rear suspension swap(s) to SC3 modern SkiDoo track suspensions(as I am planning for my '86 Formula Plus, which will get a motor transplant and give its motor to a Safari or Blizzard MX).

All in all, a good choice for a spouses machine or a no-tinkering always ready to use trail ride.

sledchad,
Where are you located? If there would be any way possible to get a sled out to you, I know where 2-88 Ski-Doos are for sale. 1 Safari 377 and 1 Stratus both electric start and very great condition. The guy would like $450 each but I think I can get them a little cheaper. I think Andy will tell you that I come across all types of sleds and I will always be honest about them. I didn't buy them, since I have way to many sleds right now and no where to go with them.
