72 JD400 covers

Post by jrbsnow »

Hi all, I was wondering what the snowmobile covers looked like for the 1972 JD400? I'd like to see a picture if someone has one! Thanks,

Jay,

If I remember correctly, the original '72 covers were plain green and had no printing or logo's. They looked just the generic ones you see around. I doubt if I have any photo's, but I see if I can find something.

The cover shown in my '72 parts book, PC1278, ( printed Jan '72 )
Has "John Deere" printed across the front, right where is located on the fuel door, and it has a leaping Deere logo on the side of the hood.

Brian, that be what the book shows, but I remember being very disappointed when we got the cover for our new 400 back in December of '71 and it was plan green. It's quite possible we just got an early cover before the printed ones were available, who knows. It seems there were different versions of some of the options that first year (like with the tachs).

You'll get no argument from me on that, Pa didn't spring for a cover back in the day.
I just thought I'd mention what the book shows.

I talked to John about stiching us up some new ones a year or two ago, but he wasn't interested.

Thought I had an old brochure showing the plain cover, but I'll be darned if I can find it. And yes, it would be great if someone could made some repo covers, it's virtually impossible to find a decent one for the older Deeres.

Hey BPMAILMAN, I have one that came with my JDX4. I'm not sure if that will work or not. Guess I should see if it fits on the 400! If it does I can send it to you.

My operators manual is a Deere reprint (OMM63442 E1). It decribes the cover as being green and yellow part #AM52145. Photo is black and white but looks like cover is green with John Deere spelled out in yellow over hood at the flip up lid. It has the yellow leaping Deere on each side. I don't think the '72s had the option of the backrest. However if you can find someone who is willing to make some I think you would have a lot of demand for ones that would fit the older green machines with a backrest. I know I would be interested in a few.

The other variable are the windshields, the '72s are different from the '73- , and of course the '73 JDX with the tiny windshield.

Not sure if this helps or muddies the water more, but this is my AM52145 cover, which is what is also shown in PC1278

I am looking for a cover that will fit my 72 400, and I don't care if it's original or not. I would like it to be green, but I might consider something else. If I can't get a cover similar to the one Chris has, I could maybe use one from a newer John Deere sled. If anybody has a cover for me, let me know! Thanks,
Jay
