Replacing pull start rope?

Post by MuskyBear »

My damn pull start rope broke today trying to get my 1980 440 LF started for the first time this season. How big of a job is it to replace a broken rope? Please tell me I don't have to pull the motor, it looks pretty tight to the frame?

you can remove the recoil without pulling the motor, it's not easy to get at some of the bolts, if you don't know how to replace it take it off & either take it to a snowmobile dealer to fix or get somone who knows because if you pull it apart & don't know what your doing you will be asshole deep in recoil spring once it lets go.

Click on "Recoil Starter" on the left.

You can take it off without pulling the motor. Removing the muffler will make it easier. It's not that hard to replace the rope. Lay it on its back and unwind the spool so there's no more spring tension. You have to keep your hand on it to keep it from getting away from you. You might want to wear a glove in case you lose it so you don't scrape your hand up. Carerfully disassemble it being most careful at the stage where you remove the spool so that the spring doesn't fly out. If it does you're up a creek. Put a new rope on and reassemble the same way you disassembled it.

For a quick fix I can just take the recoil off of another 81' 440 LF parts sled I have, then deal with replacing the rope when I have more time. That should be fairly easy quick fix right?

The rope broke on an 1980 the parts sled I had was an 1982 the diameter was different on the hub on the inside of the recoil. But it was not hard to get it off as I thought at first, everything looks intact so I am just going to try and thread a new rope through the old one with 2 people I think I can wind up the spring then thread a new rope on it.
