There has been some talk about how the first year X8s had a different clutch, and that was recalled, or replaced at reduced cost .....
Here is a shot of the clutch on my '73 X8. Unlike anyother I have.
Anyone know for sure what this is?

I recall having 1 of those also Brian think it was on an x8 motor I sold on ebay perhaps but do remember seeing it before anyone know of other sleds that may have used it.

The X8 this clutch is in has less than 1000 mi on it, however, it is pretty rough and hasn't run in quite a while. It is a future project.
So anyway, I picked up a Comet 100-C off ebay last night for $20. Should I ditch the
Salisbury ASAP in favor of the Comet?
Until now, I had no idea I had to change the secondary side as well. What is different?
The Salisbury clutches I've been used to looking at are the ones on the '72 400s, and they are more similar to the Comet in appearance.
Thanks Guys

Just FYI not all 100-C's are the same make sure that the Bore depth is the right one for your motor, some clutches were 25mm bore & others were 30mm bores some have flush bore depths while others have ( -.250, -.245 -.200, -.140, +.195, +.200 Bore depths) I believe the CCW motors took a flush bore depth.

The Comet 100-C I bought is supposedly off a JDX, so should be a bolt on I would think.

Hi Brian,
I found the Mod Kit #160 NOS at a sled show a few years ago, and picked it for cheap. It included the 100-C and a Comet 94 driven.
You should replace your driven with the Comet unit. One from most any of the 440cc Mid-mounts with the 100-C or 101-C drive should about fit the bill. "Some" of the 340 sleds used different helix angles, so check your parts books to be sure you have the proper calibration (helix) on it.
Also, trash the 'dust can' cover on the 100-C, and check for worn parts before putting it in service. I think I have NOS wieght kits for most of them if you need parts.
Good luck, and I would save that odd suck Salbury as "shelf-art". Of all my Deere sleds and parts, I only have one of them. It's pretty much that clutch that put Salsbury out of the snowmobile business.

Thanks for the input Joe.
The ebay clutch arrived last week, and it is a 100-C made for JD by Comet , and it was marked that it came off a '73 X8 440. So, I would think that should work.
May I ask why I should toss the tin dust cover?
