Since I wrote the original FAQ, I can shed some light on this. Deere did not make the Trailfire cleated track wider until 1982 and used the wider version through 1984. The Sportfire only used this wider track one year, in 1981, as it got the Liquifire rubber track in 1982.
The 1979 Trailfire used the exact same track as the 78-79 Spitfire. When the chevron lug pattern was added to the cleated track in 1980, the Spit, Trail and Sport all used it. This was the same track used on all the 80-84 Direct Drive sleds, the Spit, Sprint and Snowfire.
Therefore, an Spit, Sprint, Snow or 79-80 Trail or 80 Sportfire track will fit your sleds.
I hope this answers your questions.

Kranz,
I am pretty sure the 121" it a typo, as it looks like a Spitfire track to me. Deere patented that Chevron lug that was taller than the cleat. You in fact are looking for a 121X15" track, with a 2" drive lug pitch.
Good Luck!

Kranz,
It may have been known to others like Rich, but it only came to light a few years ago that Deere widened the "15" cleated tracks on the chaincase sleds (Trail and Sportfire) in 1981. I think the Model section was done years before by Lesniak who merged sites with Matt over 10 years ago.
As I said, any track from any year Spitfire (78-82) Sprint and Snowfire (82-84) or early Trailfire (79-80) and the 1980 Sportfire will interchange with each other and fit your Spitfire. It's only the orginal 81-84 Trailfire and 81 Sportfires tracks are two wide to fit the Direct Drive sleds tunnel.

If you go to www.muscle-iron.com and then to their JD snowmobile page link near the bottom on the left-hand side on the main page. They put the track out of a 79 trailfire on an 80 spitfire. They are located in Saskatoon. It is an interesting site as you can see different modifications they have done to JD snowmobiles.
