Piston Interchangability

Post by JDXsand00s »

I blew a Spitfire piston and am currently looking for a replacement, but DK doesn't sell kawasaki 340 pistons. i then looked in the manufacturers supply catalog and they sell a piston that will fit several kawasaki sleds as well as the trailfire 340. Will this piston also fit my 82 spitfire? Also what are the differences between kawasaki and ccw pistons, engines are either 60x60 or 68x60 and have 2 rings? Furthermore, is it alright to reuse a head gasket if engine passes pressure test? Thanks.

Catalog says trailfire 79-82, would this fall in the range of correct piston? Also, being aftermarket, how much to the companies care about discrepancies in rings? Wouldn't they just make one piston for both sleds? I really want to get the little spit going again, it can tow the other sleds home pretty good.

Yes the trail and spits have the same replacment number. In fact the 340 trail rings I bought from DK Trader which were nos also listed spitfire on the box. Now on the trailfire I know from experience you can also use arctic cat pistons from the early 70's 340 kawis but you must also use cat rings since they are thicker than the deere rings. So technicaly you can probably use them in a spitfire also if you find an ebay bargain on them. Now as far as reusing head gaskets who am I to say its ok all I can say is Ive done it many times and I often cut my own intake and base gaskets out of a sheet of gasket paper. It takes a lil effort but sure beats spending $25-30 for a gasket set when things are tight in the budget.

When I was contemplating restoring the kawi engine on my 1980 SPit, I found pistons readily avaialble thru Als Snowmobile (not sure of his source). As it turns out, I put a kohler engine in its place so I never "ordered it" but it was aroudn $49 for a piston kit (wrist pin, rings...etc). Ask for Scott Brie at Als (or google "Als Snowmobile" good site, great for hard to find and/or used parts too.

Good luck
