'81 LF getting way too much oil

Post by Mean Green »

Just wondering if anyone has ever had an oil pump that gushed oil? It starts, but then loads up and quits, spitting oil out the pipe. When we loaded it into the pickup, oil ran out the exhaust. I beleive the cable is letting it return to the idle position, any suggestions? I was wondering if weak spark could cause this, but I kinda doubt it. Any info would be great. Thanks in advance!

CK to see if the oil pump cable is adj properly or if the pump cable isn't out of place or hung up on something keeping it in the wide open throttle position
Are you sure it's an over oiling problem?? Not a over fuel problem such as the chokes not adj. properly or not seating properly???? sound more like a carb problem to me.

Hi Ken,
I bought the sled with very low (actual 614) miles. Obviously sitting forever and the guy I got it from had no history as he bought it from someones ex-wife. I put a squirt from my oil can in each cylinder and rolled it over a couple times to coat the cylinders, and premixed the gas lightly to assist in not damaging an engine that had dried out. Carbs cleaned, switch on, several pulls and it fired right up.

:D It ran ok then started to load up, and the more I blipped the throttle the worse it got until it foulded out and died amidst a very stinky cloud of blue smoke rolling out the garage door.

 I pulled the plugs and they were oiley wet, not just gas wet. Pulled the fuel line, vacuum pumped the tank dry, added straight gas and new plugs, started first pull then slowly loaded up again and died.

 It looks like my cable is routed OK, but I did have the carbs off so maybe something is amiss and my pump is being held up from returning to the idle setting. Guess I'm just gonna have to tear it apart again and recheck everything and adjust it to specs in the service manual. I'll keep ya posted. Thanks for the input Ken. Tracy

I had the same problem with a 440 LF that I bought from someone, what the problem was is the crankcase was full of oil, I don't know if the guy before me filled it with oil to preserve it or "pickle it" as they say. There is no crankcase drain on these so you either have to get it running and run the piss out of it with the track up off the ground to burn out all the oil, or do what I did, take the exhaust off, pick the sled up with a hoist from the rear so the the exhaust ports are facing the ground and turn the engine over several times to let all the oil drain out of the crankcase. It does take a long time to burn all the oil out of it.

Hey Thanks Musky, I will try that first ASAP. I glanced at it today before work and the oil pump SEAMS to be fully opening and closing with the cable. I will hoist the back end up this weekend and see what drains out. Man that would be nice if someone did actually "fill 'er up" with oil to store it. Everything else is fine. I might be sending you an "11-pack" of brew  if that's what it turns out to be. I was ready to tear into it!! Tracy

Two Words, Banjo fittings....I took mine out after reading about them on that "other" site and sure enough one of mine isn't working. These are a check valve on the oil injected sleds that keeps oil from "draining" into the crankcase. They should hold 3-6 psi before opening. I was informed DO NOT use compressed air to clean them as it will damage them. Since JD and/or Kawasaki replacements aren't readily available, Polaris used the same ones which ARE available under polaris part number 308-38-94, these are for a 1986 Indy 400, perhaps other sleds as well. The FUN part about these is that if one fails, it gets most of the oil as it doesn't require any pressure to open and starves the others. Lean = toast. Guess I'm gonna pull the engine as the one for the center main bearing is buried under the water pump, and if one is bad, than I'd rather spend a day changing external parts than a month trying to track down internal parts. If anyone has any other knowledge of sleds that use the same banjo fittings please post!! I'll let you know how it works out. Tracy
