340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
I have a NOS 340/S aluminum pan without the 2 side ridges anybody else have one on there 340/S?
The other Aluminum Pan that is mounted to one of the 340/S's I have does have the 2 side ridges??
Anyone have any Idea what was the deal with this?? Was there 4 different style pans available for the 340/S??
I'll get pics tonight of it & send to troy for posting

KENNY
How do you know that this smooth sided pan was intended as a 340S replacement, and not just a '77 replacement pan.

Re: 340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
I was thinking the '75 340/S, '76 Dator, Cyclone, Liquifire, '77 Cyclone, and Liquifire were all ribbed pans. The '78 models had the smooth pans. However the Cyclones that year were painted the lighter green not "Mean Green".
I'm thinking two options here. 1st, someone painted a '78 pan Mean Green. 2nd, this is a early prototype pan prior to the ribbing being added for extra strength?

Re: 340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
Brian, As far as I know & there isn't any pans or part numbers for pans available for any of the 76-78 sleds, so it would almost have to be for the 340/S???????????
My thinking on this IS there was a small run of these pans to replace the fiberglass pans on the 340/S's, the small run ran out so by then the 76 Cyclones were in the planning or production so they just used Cyclone pans from then on to fill 340/S pan orders?????

Re: 340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
We've never been able to figure out the exact timeline for the 340S pans.
I have the installation instructions for the aluminum pan, and it shows the part number of : AM54117. But it has no date on it.
So I don't know if the aluminum pan kit was pre-production Cyclone or not.

Re: 340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
Just to try to cure or confuse the issue. The 76 LF/Cyclone/Dator were the ONLY sleds (except 00's/X's) to use the ribbed pans. Starting in 1977 and continuing into the 78's, the pans were smoothed sided. There is no doubt in my mind that the pan in the picture is from a 77. It even has the bumper tabs for a late bumper so I'm convinced it wasn't built for a 340/S. I'll try to post a picture of the pan from Bob's 77 Cyclone. DA

Re: 340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
Don, There never was a replacement pan for anything BUT the 340/S at least in all the parts manuals?? I'll get a picture of a NOS fiber glass 340/S pan tomorrow & then one of both pans side by side.
Didn't the replacement pan with the 2 ridges also have the front tabs for the wider bumper??
Also it doesn't mention using the new style wider bumper in the M66616 Instructions for Installing Aluminum Pan Replacement Kit AM54117, & it doesn't show in the parts book a new bumper in the AM54117 Alum Pan Kit, so was there another bulletin saying to replace the old narrow bumper with the wider one?? There is only one bumper part number in the parts book that I have & that number is not sub'd My parts book is dated April 77?? or how did the wider bumper usage come to be?

Re: 340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
I chatted with Kenny about this on Tuesday night. I wasn't following where he was going with this.
But he is correct, the Cyclone / LF parts book shows the tunnel and pan as one complete unit. My brother threw off a '76 Cyclone tunnel behind my shop last week, I'll have to look to see if the pan is welded to the tunnel.
As for the Cyclone style bumper; the instructions tell you how to install it, but it is not listed in the parts book.

Re: 340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
Kenny... There was a replacement pan for the 76,s. I have seen them and know the whereabouts of 2. I was offered 1 for my Balsam lake racer but declined for obvious reason. So why cant there be one for the 77-78 sleds? I think you have a 77 Cyclone pan there. Easy to figure out. With the pan in an upright position, run a straightedge along the back top-edge. If it measures approx 44 inches then its Cyclone. If its 42 then its a 340/s. If its Cyclone and just taking space at your place let me know. Moral of the story: Dont always believe the books.

Re: 340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
Thanks Chuck
Now that is what I was looking for is some kind of info that Deere did in fact offer pans contrary to what the parts book say.. Now the next question, were these pans offered in some kind of service only as needed? or were they just gotten from the factory by workers @ Horicon before they were assembled to the tunnels??
I will send Troy more pictures to post of the tunnel & of my 77 NOS liquifire tunnel, now I don't know what differences in the pans were in 77 between the Liquifire & the Cyclone, but the green pan I have has 4 ridges in the belly & after looking closer the 77 Liquifire tunnel/pan does also??

Re: 340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
Guys, After reviewing a couple of pictures Troy sent me of his pan on his 340/S & looking at the 340/S chassis I have here I would have to agree that the NOS Pan I have would be for a 77 Cyclone, Also one thing I didn't catch prior to today is the NOS pan has an exhaust outlet hole whereas the 340/S aluminum pans do not..
I think with everyone who helped on this one we figured it out..
Also like Chuck said " don't believe everything you see or read in the books "..
Thanks guys..
