295 clutching and carb questions

Post by monte44 »

Can anyone point me in the direction on what clutch arms and spring to use on a 102c. I have a very nice used 102 off a JDX8 I was gonna use on my 295/S. The 100 clutch is VERY wore out ( Is it me or do the 100 clutches wear more often than the 102) The 102 I have has the white spring and F-2 arms is this good to go?? I am also wondering about the carb needle and seat size the ones I took out are 1.5 flow is this correct? Also what is the stock gear numbers (top gear teeth no./bottom gear teeth no. The one I am restoring was raced heavily and I wanna put it back to stock. One more thing can someone PLEASE sell me a set of NOS snowflap cables I could really use some. I also really need the LH and RH side plastic access covers ok I am asking for too much now!!! WACONIA 2010!!!!!! :sled:

Thanks everyone for the help thus far !!!!

Aaron,

The 295s uses the "E" arms. I have a 102C with "F" arms and there is a huge difference between the E & F arms. I have my clutch apart and I'll try to get some pictures of the two weights side by side for you to see the difference. The "E" is a much lighter weight and has a notch cut in it to stall the clutch shifting to allow the little 295 to build some RPM's. I think the "F" arms would shift too much too fast and really labor the engine.

The book calls for a M65466 spring. It says it subs to a M66024 which is a blue spring that the 340/S uses. Deere used it's own color code on Comet springs so it gets confusing. I will tell you from past experience that the Deere blue spring and the Comet white spring are the same spring so your white spring should be correct.

Stock gearing is a 16 tooth upper sprocket and 39 tooth lower sprocket. If you change gears be sure to use the correct chain to match the gear ratio. There were two different chains used depending on which gear ratio you ran.

Aaron,

Here are a two pictures of the clutch arms. The set I have are "F" not "F-2". Not sure how much difference there is between the two. You can see the difference in the ramps between the "F" & "E" and the notch cut in the "E" weight.

Here is a top view. The "E" weight is thinner.

Troy, I agree a F weight wouldn't work at all as it is 55.0 Grams that would keep the top RPM WAY too low, as the AM53406 "M" ( which is in fact is your pictured E weight with the notch = a "M" ) is the std weight for the for the 295/S & it only weights 38.3 grams & even the AM54285 "E" weight ( stock E has no notch ) is on the heavy side at 40.5 grams.
The E, C, & the M are all U profile weights, so the shifting pattern should be the same after engagement. The "C" might shift a little faster as it's tip is heavier??
I would say if you'd want a weight with a smoother shift & not the jump on the start the AM54285 "E" @ 40.5 Grams or the AM53003 "C" weight at 44.7 grams is about the heaviest you can go & still have a U profile with out getting way too heavy..
The "F-2 is way to heavy of a weight @ 54.0 Grams
If using Comets weights part numbers a B-2 is a "U" profile & @ 41.0 Grams with no notch Comet number 03-208232 or 03-208233. Comets number for a "std ( no Notch "E" weight 40.0 grams ) is 03-203089.
I always wondered what using a A style Comet weight would be like ( the weights kind of like the Polaris's use ) but never got around to playing with any..???

Interesting information on weights. I have a 102C on my 295/S and it has C weights in it. I assumed it was stock, but perhaps this sled originally had a 100 clutch and was later replaced with a 102 from something else. Why did some 295s have a 100 clutch and some the 102?

To the best of my knowledge, the 340/S was the first sled to have the 102C.
The 100C is not a real long life, or particularly re-buildable clutch.
I'll bet your "C" arms are really "P"s.

My guess (as I don't have a STD. OEM weight ) is that the 295/S & the 340/S weights are both marked "C" as the C weight is .246" wide & 44.7 grams & this is probably the weight that was used as a donor before cutting down or grinding???
Just a thought..

Comet lists two different white springs. Their calibration guide shows the JDX8 and 295/s using the same white spring part #203474. Just to be on the safe side to make sure you have the correct spring check the dimensions of the spring out. The #203474 is the same as the Deere blue spring.

Spring height: 3-1/8"
Wire dia: .187
# of coils: 5

Troy,
With the primary weights and spring as you suggested, what spring and hole setting should be used on the secondary?

The book shows to install the spring in hole #1 and to turn the helix 130 degrees counter clockwise for correct spring tension.
