Breather box/340 trailfire

I'd like to know if I can do away with reinstalling the breather box on my trailfire...the box that sits in front of the carb...any suggestions?? Do I put the box in first or the carb then the box? I'm new to this stuff, just found this '80 trailfire sitting in storage since 1993, pulled the carb and cleaned it out, floats seem to be fine..cleaned all the sediment etc out of the carb...now I'm peeling the skin off my hands and fingers trying to get the box back in...any help at all would be appreciated...thanks in advance..Dar :pray:

I know what you mean. I never did this, but give it a try. Remove the clamps completely. Try pushing the boot inside the airbox but leave enough out to hold on to it. Set the carb in place then pull the boot thru the box on the carb. Work the boot out, snapping it place and unwind the clamps and wrap them around the carb and boot. I had my tank off and found the easiest way was in from the back.

I found the easiest way is to unbolt the rubber intake boot from the intake manifold, put the carb in the airbox and tighten the clamp, then put the rubber boot on the carb, then slide the airbox/carb/boot assembly down, then bolt the boot to the manifold.

Its back in after some serious cussing and loss of skin...i put the airbox in first, then pressed ths carb into the manifold boot, then wiggled and cussed and wiggled and by the good grace of God the rubber boot slid back into place between the carb and airbox...I'm amazed it went thru all this unscathed...wish I could say the same thing about my nuckles and wrist skin......now, the test firing...i got good spark, the fuel is reaching the carb and into the cylinder, plugs are wet with fuel, she fires and idles roughly with the choke all the way out..release the choke and attempt to throttle up and she dies...there is a primer lever above the fuel tank and the line off from the primer was installed into the hard rubber gasket just in front of the intake manifold...was this an aftermarket addition maybe? It does not work...the previous owner globbed sealant all over the connection...seems odd to me that anyone would think that threading a rubber boot and screwing a brass insert into it would work??

This picture shows the connection point of the refrenced primer I was referring to...the brass fitting was just pushed down inside the rubber gasket and had sealant globbed across the top of it...I pulled the sealant off and ran a drillbit down thru the hole and inserted that green tube you see in the pic and threaded the connection so the brass fitting could be seated properly...but now I've learned the primer doesnt do anything...the fuel wont come up from the mainline which is fitted with a T valve...is this primer a factory install on this sled or is this something the original owner installed?[img]http://i662.photobucket.com/albums ... .jpg[/img]

That was an add-on from the previous owner. You should replace the carb mount with a new, replace the choke plunger in the carb, and adjust the cable properly. A primer on a Mikuni VM carb is unnecessary if the carb is set up correctly.

Primers are for diaphram carbs with built in fuel pumps. Not needed on Carbs with fuel bowls as the gas is always right there.

Fuel line coming off the tank has a filter next in line is a fuel pump off that the line has a T valve with one line running up to the primer switch then off the primer switch down to the fitting between the carb and intake and the other line off the T feeds fuel directly to the carb.

:sled: Ittttttssssssssssss Aaaaalivvvvveeee :clap: I removed the primer..adjusted the choke cable...turned the fuel/air mixture screw as far in as it would go....pulled the starter rope...she fired...pulled rope again, she fired and idled at 3000 rpm...I let her get warmed up...adjusted the idle screw down to about 1000 rpm..opened the f/a mixture screw 1/2 turn...oooooo, she purrs pretty...smoke, lol..neighbor called to find out what I was burning in my trash barrel....dropped her off the sled stand, hopped on the seat and grabbed the throttle and took her for a test run across the pasture over to the neighbors...I dont need to worry bout getting lost, I can follow my exhaust trail back to my shed...did a couple laps around the homestead, just nuff to piss the lil woman off...brought her back to the shed...turned the f/a mix screw in 1/4 turn and she quit smoking, not totally but now I will need a GPS to find my way back home....Thanks to all who responded with advice and suggestions...Dar
