clutch alingment
i'm wondering how to properly aling the clutches on my 78 liquifire

is there a way to do it with out using the john deere alingment tool since i sure they are hard to come by, or does someone have one to measure i can just make one (i work at a machine shop)

Check your local Deere dealer-they may still have the tool hanging on a wall somewhere. I bought a couple of alignment tools from Rich (takeittothelimit) and then found out later that we had those tools in our toolroom! (I work at a JD dealer)

Here are a few ways to try and get the clutches close enough without the proper tools.
-Remove engine from pan and turn it over and look at the baseplate mounts to see if the mounting bolts have been moved from the original place which would have left wear marks on the base plate. Return to orignal marks
-Use a 20 inch long, 3/8 square key stock, laying it inside both primary and secondary clutchs. Measure the distance from the engine side of the primary to inside edge of the key stock,. Add / substract shims behind secondary to achive 1 1/4 front measurement. Measure both front side and rear side of primary, move engine to have both measurements equal. See page 26 of

-The center to center distance between the clutches is approx 292 mm.
