Well, that would make sense. I bought this sled from a relative who is a bit of a dim bulb when it comes to mechanical issues.
With regard to the secondary, before I disassembled it, I marked the hole for the spring so I wouldn't goof up.
Maybe I should look for a 102c, then.

78 Liquifire 440 clutch issues
I've got a 78 440 Liquifire with a Comet 94c clutch. We got just enough snow in central Indiana for me to get it out. Here's the problem: When I hit the gas, the factory secondary opens up too much, allowing the 94c to close down too much. The pucks on the 94c get stuck, and won't release. Then, it ...

Re: '78 Liquifire 1st sled need advice
I got the new parts for the secondary yesterday (thanks Matt) and got it all slapped together this morning. We got about 1.5 inches of snow this morning, just enough to test the new speedo in the bean field. I must have done something right, because I hit 65mph in the flat on frozen ground and a lit...

Re: 100mph speedo vs 80mph?
Todd, you make a good point!
I went ahead with the 80 mph. There's not a lot of room around here, still too many fence rows.
You can't go more than a mile or so without slowing down.
Thanks for the advice, guys!

100mph speedo vs 80mph?
My 100mph speedo on my '78 440 Liquifire is shot. The guts are falling out the back. There are several 80mph speedos on eBay for reasonable prices. Are these a direct swap, or do I need to change out the drive gear down below as well? I think my drive gear and cable are just fine. They seem to turn ...

Re: '78 Liquifire 1st sled need advice
I don't want to replace the track unless absolutely necessary. I just want to be prepared in the future.
I'm planning on keeping it for a long time.
I may have a chance at an '80 sportfire, and an old JD snowmobile trailer. I'm working on the guy.
It would be fun to have a pair with trailer!

Re: '78 Liquifire 1st sled need advice
Sorry, I missed it in my original post. It's a 440 with the cleated track. I read up a lot on here and plan to replace the crank seals probably this summer when I go through it. There's not much chance to us getting much more snow this winter, and we have a planter to overhaul for spring. Matt, than...

'78 Liquifire 1st sled need advice
I bought a '78 Liquifire from a relative (original owner) for $100 a couple of weeks ago. Cleaned the carbs and gas tank out, put new fuel lines on it, and away we went! The sled sat for almost 30 years, but was prepped for storage back in the 80's, so I lucked out there. This is my first snowmobile...
