72 500 walbro carb
So I fanally got this old 500 started. Complete tear down of engine and fuel system. Put it all back together and she runs. So I finally get some time to adjust the carb. (New seals and cleaned well). Its a walbro WD8-5 I set the needles to 1 full turn out to start. Long story short. To get it to id...

1972 500. Testing ignition components
So, I finally got around to messing with my grandpa's old 72' 500. Been sitting for over 20 years. Currently I have things mostly cleaned up and decided to look at the ignition components. As that's what stopped the sled from running. It lost all spark and nobody came back to mess with it after it w...

Re: JDX8 exhaust problem.
Digging deaper again. Well, motor mounts seem ok. Engine is snug. So, checked the manifold end. Yup. Its square. Ball and socket. Yup, round and mated nicely. I put the springs on the manifold to the pipe. Socket end loose and held it by hand where it normally would sit. (Took the muffler out.) Here...

Re: JDX8 exhaust problem.
They are certainly not in the best shape, but they seem to be snug. I was questioning that myself. I'll have to take another look at them too.

Re: JDX8 exhaust problem.
Yup. It is the tuned 800 exhaust. The pipe cracked in the center of the pipe. Directly behind the hood support. I have since welded it and were good now. I'm positive that the vibration is what caused it to crack. So, that pipe sits still while at idle, but once it's up into enough rpms to engage th...

JDX8 exhaust problem.
So, my first outing on the 75' X8 and the dang exhaust cracked. Rather than find a new piece, I just welded up the cracks. However, I believe what caused the crack was all the vibrating the exhaust pipe was experiencing. It's as if the springs are not holding it in place well enough. The manifold is...

In case anyone needed to know. The holes are 3/16. Just got new cleats in and measured with calipers.

Re: Fired her up on Saturday
Perhaps upload on to youtube, then set up a link. I just got a notice on my phone that a JDX8 video was put on there today. My phone never has done that and confused me. lol

Re: Walbro carb
So, did you ever get your carb figured out fully? I'm currently going through some trial and error with mine from the X8. I did the winderosa kit and found I had ALOT of excess fuel flowing through the carb. So much so that it wasn't burning the oil and made a black sludge mess. Didn't understand th...

Re: No lights, no working tach.
So,, I haven't had the time yet to check every thing. But, I was messing around with the wires, looking them over, decided to check the switches first. Key switch had continuity on proper terminals. Pulled the light switch,,, well, there are 5 terminals on it. 3 more than i anticipated... Continuity...

Re: No lights, no working tach.
That's kinda what I was thinking was a bad ground. I been looking over the wiring diagrams and can't see anything that jumps out showing where the problem could lay. Out side of the ground wires, I did notice that there are 2 wires, both green/yellow coming off the stator. They appear to not have an...

No lights, no working tach.
So I finally got the 75' JDX8 back together, enough to fire up. Redone the engine and carb after sitting for about 20 years. One of the other known problems i remember from 20 years ago was that the voltage regulator went bad. Headlight got very bright then blew all the lights out. So I replaced the...

Track cleat replacment
So I have a bad cleat on the X8. Musta took a good hit back in the day. I do have the updated 2/3 kimplex track. It was replaced in the mid 80s. But I can't seem to find any replacment options for that cleat online. Any ideas ?

Re: 75 X8, engine cover/shroud mount.
Thanks guys, that info makes a ton of sence. I was wondering why there were 2 bolts with pointy sheet metal behind them. Hadn't researched it that far yet. I am definitely missing that plate. 2016-10-30 09.03.14.jpg Seems that it would be fairly important in keeping the engine heat going the rite di...
