I wonder if the difference in the engine is the fact that the Special did not come with oil injection and hence just a different recoil starter. I had a look at the piston and cylinder listings and there does not appear to be any difference for the Special.liquitisplit80 wrote:82-Liquifire,
According to JD parts catalog they list a different PN for the hood so something must be different. (Look it over carefully, extra heat shield??)They also list a different PN for the dash. Perhaps because of the headlight switch?? Also check the PN on the engine thats different too. (higher compression??)
Congratulations on your find! It's always nice to discover you have a rare one!

Re: 1982 Trailfire Special (Canadian Special)
Very cool topic! These machines have been brought up many times through the years but never at this level of detail.
The production numbers show that in May 81 there were 1583 340cc Trailfires built. In June 81 there were 240 built.
In Sep 81 there were 37 340 Trailfires built and these 37 would have been the last Trailfire 340's ever made.
So in June when they made the 240 machines ........ this could be the amount of Specials made but not sure.
I know how I can find out and I will work on it.
82 Liquifire ..... what is the build date on your machine?
Joe

Nice find Greg, from what I've heard most of these sleds are at the bottom of lakes.
The headlight switch on these two sleds are in different locations.
Were these kits factory or dealer installed?
