The clutch puller threads in the end of the clutch pushing against the end of the crank. You need to remove the clutch mounting bolt. Use of an impact gun with the clutch puller is the easiest and you can hold the clutch from spinning in your hand. Apply oil to the thread of the puller prior for lubrication.pwgsx wrote:Thanks for the replys and info. Do you know what metric thread size that might be on the flywheel? I see that clutch puller but is there another part that holds the clutch while I turn that in that I need or would a strap clamp or something hold it?

Re: 1981 Liquifire Project
Ok, parts ordered, so I'll be pulling the engine this weekend hopefully. I have been reading the shop manuel and noticed there is oil in the chaincase and gear case but kinda confused by what oil to use. In the book it says the chaincase and has a pic ( but is calling it a gear case) and to use API-GI5 sae 90 gear oil?? I see online they make 90W chain oil- can this be used??. It also stated to use 10w-40 SE oil in the gear case- is this standard motor oil or is it gear oil that is used for clutch systems in atv's and bikes??
I did some looking and called the local dealer for Amsoil and he said he has a chaincase and gear oil which im guessing I could use in both cases?? He was not sure bc his list did not cover john deere sleds.

I also found the amsoil Dominator injection oil is better for higher temp engines and trail motors than Interceptor so I think that would be a better choice. What do you guys think?

Re: 1981 Liquifire Project
I got the Sport Fire almost torn down minus the engine, just waiting on the clutch puller to remove it.
Re: 1981 Liquifire Project
Made some progress today, I cleaned the gas tank to find the hole for the bushing was too big. 3/4 of a inch instead of the 1/2, I plugged it with a 3/4 brass plug and drilled a hole above. It should work well hopefully but what a pain. I also ordered a new fuel pump and hose. Now I need to make a cart so I can move the sled to the shed and garage easily.
I did a compression test to find both holes with 140 psi. They are dead on so I dont know what the previous owner was talking about but he obviously didnt use a compression gauge. I will be pulling the motor anyway to paint and clean everything and I think I will pop the head off anyway and make sure everything is ok. Since it is pretty old I plan to change out the crank seals but just removing the bottom case to do so.

Im ordering some parts that I need but cant find the gear box drive cover seal. Can a silicone sealant be used? I know it will have to be scraped off each year while changing the oil but Im out of ideas for that.
Re: 1981 Liquifire Project
Got them on this websites store. newbreedparts.com
Many new and used parts available, I ship anywhere. Thanks everyone.
Re: 1981 Liquifire Project
Man I dont know where you are looking but I have gone thru that whole site and dont see it. I am talking about the seal that goes around the cover of the gear box. It looks like a large O ring but has a "U' shape that presses onto the main housing and the cover has a notch that the seal fits in once together.

Looked right over that one - 2 X.....lol, thanks buddy
Re: 1981 Liquifire Project
Weekend update- Got new fuel pump hooked up and attached to a gas IV and unplugged all wires to the rev limiter and get her started. It is idling a little high but will now rev up with the pull on the throttle. I also check compression again and it is still at 140 in both holes . I do need new carb mounting flanges as both are cracked and since I will be pulling the engine I plan to split the bottom case only and change out the crank seals. It looks like that is all that will need to be done minus cleaning everything and maybe clutch adjustments.
Re: 1981 Liquifire Project
Got the sled all back together, carbs were VERY dirty but cleaned nicely. Here are some finished pics, I didn't go all crazy with the restore, just did everything that was needed to make it run. To my surprise all the lights, gauges and brake lights work. When I found it, it was stored outside without a cover for many years. Now to decide what to do with her since TX is not a place I can use it. I still need grips, and new carbides but that should be it.
Re: 1981 Liquifire Project
....am I the only one curious about what the "air cooled" extra sled is?
80 JD TrailFire 340 (440 motor, currently toasted)
80 JD LiquiFire (currently being restored)
80 JD Spitfire (becoming this years rider, hopefully)
80 JD Spitfire (project, parts? Who knows...)

Re: 1981 Liquifire Project
The fan cooled one? It had a toasted motor and I parted all usable parts out and cut the tunnel off and sent it to the recycler.
