1980 440 Liquifire

Post by sledhead16 »

Well guys here she is my first liquifire. $100 got today saved from getting taken to scrape yard where its twin in better shape was apparently taken!!!! Its missing a seat, air box, has a tough track and the motor will only turn with a bar wedged in clutch as leverage. Will it take some kind of oil to loosen her? Let's have some input on the whole situation guys!

You have a lot of work ahead of you. Since it does not have an air-box, more than likely water has found it's way into the crankcase and rusted things up. But then again, the recoil could be stuck or jammed. Get it inside and take your time and have fun. Worst case, you may want to part it out.

Your only option right now is to start taking things apart until you find out what is seized, then from there we can point you in the right direction.

Yes it is from rapidan lol. So I peered through the right carb intake and that is where I saw the chunks of ice in the engine.

Might be a broken off piston skirt? I don't know why there would be a "chunk" of ice sitting there unless someone shoved it in.

Yeah I hasseled the guy about the ad...he is strictly a scraper and had a some lady post it for him...My guess is just like harleysportster said there was no air box on it, and the clutch side carb was not even attached and the exhaust side carb was attached. The sled was jacked up but sitting outside for at least a year with no cover on it! I'm guessing the culprit is rain/snow/whatever moisture entered through the carb intake ports as there was spark plugs screwed in and the recoil was attached.

So I learned tonight that taking off just a liquifire recoil can be a pain but doable.... so there is a couple pics not much to see but I do have a chip out of the housing apparently, how big a deal is that?

It leaves a hole for moisture to get in at at the stator, I just tore down a liquifire motor for parts to be parted out.
I'm sure I have that cover
Many new and used parts available, I ship anywhere. Thanks everyone.

In this post you will see the exhaust side cylinder with the chunks of ice in it. Now it was 36 degrees here today and I was able to turn the clutch counter clockwise but not clockwise by hand. Why is that? Both cylinders did move up and down.

That motor is going to need to be pulled out and overhauled at the least.
