Elusive 82 Trailfire 340 Canadian Special

Post by sledhead16 »

Well, about an hour and 20 mins from my doorstep was this 1982 Trailfire 340 Canadian Special. I saw it on Craigslist with some other sleds listed in a garage sale. After contacting the seller she informed me it didn't run and that it was an 84, I informed her that it was an 82. She originally wanted more than I was willing to pay and said she would check back with me. I figured it was just a run of the mill 82 340 Trailfire so I continued on with my day. Later on I decided to ask for a serial # pic just for fun, she sent one and boom! My jaw dropped, it was a c. Special! I immediately set up a time to get it. I pulled up and yup she was complete, and what I speculated. Motor is stuck after being severely violated by mice! It will take a donor motor or two to get one put together for her. Today was a good day.

Nice find Allen. That is one Trailfire I really like. As for NOS parts, I do have primer brackets, heavy duty hitch tongs, and the 6.08" diameter center idler wheels if you need them.

Good luck on bringing her back to running condition.

The Canadian special suspension came reinforced from the factory. Freshened it up and installed it, clutches were freshened up and aligned. Motor was rebuilt with new spi pistons and new gaskets and seals. Secondary shaft and drive shafts pulled and new bearings installed. Chaincase got new cork gaskets and a new rubber seal. Fuel tank was flushed. Still some small things to finish but getting towards the end finally!

Fired her up today, so good to here em pur after all that work! Went with a standard clean 340 carb on it, no primer outlet simply cause it was ready to go and well I'm low on time! Couple small things to button it up like mount tank and seat and windshield, wearbars, fan scoop, etc.

Allen,

Great to see another Special getting brought back to life. I've been a JD sled owner since 1983, but I learn something new about them daily, like the factory reinforcing on the Canada Special skid. Cool sled, looking forward to seeing pic's of her on the snow.
